Either will work, if you want to get exsessive, the .300 Win Mag will give you .308 bullets at 270 speeds...but for deer, the 270 is damn near perfect.

YES! There was an M/39 basically a k98 in 8x57. Most of those were reworked into 8x63 as the M/40. Just a note, the 8x63 Swedish(Bofors) is NOT interchangeable with 8mm-06.

Naw, the military has passed on 7mm's too many times for 30 cals, think they'd stick with a "bigger is better" philosophy...could've really gone off the rails in they had gone all in on the 8x57 and then kept the .318 bore.

If the government hadn't been too cheap to pay Mauser rights, there would have been US made M98 rifles in 8x57 and we'd have a whole different group of cartridges to argue about. just think about it, could be PAGES of argument about wether FN, BRNO or Winchester made the best 98...

Why the 8x57is? Old school cool. If you reload(and you say you do) look up the CFE223 data. 1. You typically shoot under 200 yards, WELL within the capabilities of the ORIGINAL modern rifle cartridge. 2.The best bolt action ever concieved was litterally designed around it. Bubba'ed up...
