I’m deciding a new rifle caliber… any thoughts?

Either will work, if you want to get exsessive, the .300 Win Mag will give you .308 bullets at 270 speeds...but for deer, the 270 is damn near perfect.

Rifles I wish I'd bought when I had the chance...

Passed on both a Mauser Model 96(1996 straight pull) and a mint Ruger Deerfield 44 Carbine when a local shop went out of business back in 1997...did leave with a really nice Blackhawk in .357(sold it after a couple year, should have kept it).

The “best” round for, deer, elk, pronghorn, black bear, so on and so forth.

Well, my favorite centerfire rifle is chambered in 8x57, it shoots 200gr bullets best...if I can't tip it over with that, I probably don't need to hunt it.

    Your favorite firearm?

As much as I love my Mausers, they will never take over as favorite from my 10/22 Carbine, looks like it's been drug through every patch of brush in the country by a twelve year old...used to know that 12 year old back in 1987...:D

Is this Mauser conversion kit compatible with a Dumoulin action

It should fit, think I'd stick to a beat up old small ring 93 though...SO many higher purposes for that double square bridge action...just begging for a Euro-hammer cartridge isn't it? 7x64 maybe...

    Refinish or no?

That is already glorious, don't change a thing.

    Odd Swedish Mauser...Identification??

Here's a link with good pictures. Sounds like a cool old Mauser to me. http://www.gotavapen.se/gota/artiklar/rifles_se/gev39_40.htm

    Odd Swedish Mauser...Identification??

YES! There was an M/39 basically a k98 in 8x57. Most of those were reworked into 8x63 as the M/40. Just a note, the 8x63 Swedish(Bofors) is NOT interchangeable with 8mm-06.

    On-Line Reloading Data?

Lee dies come with some pretty extensive load data. "Modern Reloading" has the data from most of the powder companies combined into a single book.

What caliber to make and load for a "93" mauser

A little out of left field, however, I've got a 9x57mm reamer with a .358 pilot. Use a .358 barrel and you could use factory ammo or reload with .358 bullets and get a lower preasure rifle that falls between a .35 Rem and a .358 Winchester. I planned on building one on a small ring when I...

    Are Arken scopes actually good?

Last I heard Meopta still makes most of it's glass in it's Czech factory. They were a supplier to Zeiss, don't know if they still are.

Obsolete Rifle Rounds with Very Famous Offspring

Naw, the military has passed on 7mm's too many times for 30 cals, think they'd stick with a "bigger is better" philosophy...could've really gone off the rails in they had gone all in on the 8x57 and then kept the .318 bore.

Obsolete Rifle Rounds with Very Famous Offspring

If the government hadn't been too cheap to pay Mauser rights, there would have been US made M98 rifles in 8x57 and we'd have a whole different group of cartridges to argue about. just think about it, could be PAGES of argument about wether FN, BRNO or Winchester made the best 98...

Recommend a new rifle caliber for me

Why the 8x57is? Old school cool. If you reload(and you say you do) look up the CFE223 data. 1. You typically shoot under 200 yards, WELL within the capabilities of the ORIGINAL modern rifle cartridge. 2.The best bolt action ever concieved was litterally designed around it. Bubba'ed up...

Does Anyone Use A 270 Win.

With the excetion of 8x57, killed a lot of deer with .270 Winchester. I've got 3 of them in the safe...reminds me, I need to get the M70 out and shoot it one of these days...

Deer in their natural enviornment sure are pretty...

especially when it's in my smoker!

Rifle Cartridge You Love for No Real Reason

Because it is the original do it all modern cartrige, perfection in a 98...as ordained by God and Peter Paul Mauser. My favorite too.

Another low budget scope thread (things change)

Hawke sells a suprisingly decent 4x32 for $80, not at the same level optically as my Meopta Artemis, but fairly close to the now discontinued 4x38 Weaver.

Does every gun you own have a reason to justify its purchase?

Sure, because I thought it was a good idea at the time.

What powder manufacturer do you use MOST often?

Well this year I loaded a BUNCH of 8x57, so I used a pile of CFE223. All things being equal, I try to keep it to just a few powders that cover all my needs. Right now I have CFE223, H4895 on hand. IMR 4895, 4350 & 7828. Reloader 17 and Ramshot Big Game. CFE223 & 7828 are my two most used...
