At a minimum any gunsmith should be able to check the dimensions of the cylinders and bore to decide what caliber it might be. From there you can probably start sorting out what you've got.

You can address the over penetration issue by loading the revolver with a variety of ammo choices (one has already been suggested), including .38+P, the modern high-expansion .357M SD rounds or the .357M light-loads developed for just this scenario.

I'm hoping that, with the success of the LCR series, that they add the .22WMR next year. If not, I'm going shopping for the S&W351PD.

Absolutely!! That's pretty much how I got my .480 Ruger, .454 Casull and .41 Mag. Those are now high on my list of favorite calibers.

I have a Super Redhawk in .480 Ruger. Great platform, great caliber. Ammo is tricky and pricey unless you reload, then it's not a problem.

I have both a S&W625JM and 325 Night Guard. Both excellent at what they are designed for. I also have a Dan Wesson .460 Rowland which also chambers .45acp. It's a fantastic revolver, but hard to find and a bit pricey.
