Australian gun control, failing miserably as usual

Took less than 4 hours for the anti gun comments to start. The leader of the greens party called for a complete ban on firearms, and the PM has indicated he's in favor of it but it's a state responsibility (funny, seeing as he forced the states to adopt the current laws). I really feel like I'm...

Aussie attacking my 2 favorite things

Unfortunately, the legislation in Victoria states that anything with the appearance of a firearm can be taken as the real thing. So yeah, that little cap pistol you buy your kid can net you jail time if the copper is in a bad mood. And to those saying aussies are wimps...I'll let you try saying...

    Gun ownership in Australia

Chui, when I first moved to Melbourne I noticed that difference between city folk and rural people. I couldn't really put my finger on it and kept describing it as the seemed somehow softer. I think that's the main reason gun control gets a foothold, because so many people live in cities and...

    Bbs In Australia?

Arctic Assault, forget it. You might get away with carrying a leatherman or similar, but an actual knife, no way. If you are dumb enough to tell a copper you are carrying a spanner for the purpose of self defense I think they can arrest you. Simple solution of course is to conceal it and not...

    Zombies

If it's set in Australia, they might be able to get hold of an sks or two, they're still legal on a category c license. At least in Victoria last time I checked. Much more likely to run into lever actions in whatever cal. Bolt guns, some pistols. Military armory, steyrs, minimi, maybe MAG58...

Most interesting anti propaganda clips from YouTube? (new Aussie agitprop)

Good to see a couple of other aussies making the same points I was going to make. I seem to recall there's something like 8 hundred thousand licensed firearms owners in Australia. Now, that's from memory, so it's probably not too accurate. But there's still plenty of aussies who enjoy the...

Australian Report Says Gun Laws Work

Gee..thanks, I think. :scrutiny: One thing that springs to mind is that I think there have been attempts at mass shootings since the laws were introduced, but they haven't been successful. I think there was a student who tried it at Monash university, which prompted introduction of more...

When only the military has arms...

The Australian foreign minister has said that the citizens of Fiji should resist passively (The Age, 7-dec-06, page 2). I was disgusted when I read that, dictatorships should be fought tooth and nail. :barf:

    Top 10 Battle Rifles

I think Diggers have used the AUG on the two way firing range in east timor, and Afghanistan. Although it might have been used in Iraq I think they've got issued M16s for commonality with US forces.

    Huge Gun Bust - Whowee!

Wow, some of the stories in this thread could almost make me cry. I can't imagine the uproar if I got pulled over in Australia, anywhere urban, with any firearms in the car not locked in a case or portable safe. I'd probably spend the next 10 years in the clink. :barf:

Recent report on Austrailan Gun Violence

    Military service

I'm thinking of doing a couple of years as a digger in the engineers, then going for officer. I've always thought it's better to be an enlisted soldier before going officer than just going straight to officer. Ended up picking the army because boats, err...ships, arn't for me, and the air force...

    .50BMG Against Geneva Convention?

I've been told the same thing about 7.62X51 by a corpral. Didn't belive a word of it.

What is the best manually-operated assault rifles and carbines in the UK-today?

I can confirm that in Australia anything that looks millitary is a no no. There's a complete list of features that are banned, including stuff like pistol grips.

    Steyr AUG

I don't find reloads slow, but I guess it's because I train on it.

    Steyr AUG

I can say that the AUG is pretty accurate (think capable of under 2 MOA at 100 yards, possably better), nice and compact, fairly light. Not a bad rifle, but I can't really compare it to much in the way of semi autos. The main problem I get with it is obstructions in the body when a case bounces...

What rifle were you issued in basic training?

AusSteyr, and the FN Minimi. The steyr was well and truly worn in, but I never had any problems. The minimi was fine, except if we were using blanks. I even managed a couple of sub 60mm groups with my #9311980 :)

The Port Arthur Massacre in Australia

I can safely say the gun laws worked. I got offered a new in box ruger .22 pistol with 15 round mag for AU$500 a couple of months ago. Dunno how much that works out to in USD, but I suspect it's not terribly much considering.

Britain - Service Armories' Guns Stolen

That would be from lock, stock and two smoking barrels. One of my favorite movies.
