    1911 reliability, a poll

My SV in 40 can go at least three thousand rounds between cleaning. I think it's just a matter of having everything tuned properly. If the recoil spring, extractor, ejector and ammo are all tuned they can go a very long time between cleaning.

    500 s&w loads

I experimented with 600 grain bullets a while back. Started with 26.5 grains of H110 and worked up to 34 grains. Used QuickLOAD to predict the pressures, which were just under 50,000psi for the 34 grain load. Never saw any pressure signs and all cases dropped out of the cylinder after firing.

Time to buy a .475 Linebaugh.

    Carry ammo 38/357?

Sorry, I should have specified. I chronographed my reloads at 950 fps. At 17 grains of H110 I'm 0.3 above what Hodgdon lists as max.

    Carry ammo 38/357?

I keep 158 grain Hydra-Shoks in my M&P 360. My practice ammo is 158 grain lead with 17 grains of H110. My only complaint about the recoil is the trigger guard hitting my trigger finger. Is that out of a 1 7/8" barrel? Because I'm only getting around 950 fps with full power ammo out of mine.

44 magnum brass 44 special performance

Just look at 44 Special data. Lyman lists 6.5 grains of Unique at 799 fps and 5.6 grains of Red Dot at 713 fps. Both are max loads for the Special.

Steel guide rods, good or just a feel good.

Yeah, it's good if you want to add weight. Tungsten guide rods are even available for a lot of guns if you want to add even more weight out front. http://www.glockmeister.com/Glockmeister-Tungsten-Recoil-Assembly-For-Gen-4-G19-and-23/productinfo/G4TG19CS/...

Opinions wanted; .38 Super or 9x23 Winchester?

Realistically in a custom gun they are the same round. I have three guns chambered in 38 Super and they all work with 9x23 brass. Only real important thing is to make sure you have a fully supported barrel if you are going to run full power ammo.

    44 magnum moonclips

I haven't had any of my 44's cut for clips yet, but I do have a 357. Only real issue is that you need to match the brass with the clips. Since it is a rimmed case, there isn't a standard extractor groove size. Clips will be tight with some brass and loose with others. I bought all Starline...

Walther Model 9 is the only thing I can find under 4".

    Cheapest big bore to feed?

Realistically if you are reloading it really isn't going to be that big of a difference. If you want a semi-auto, a pistol caliber will allow you to run cheap plated bullets. In a bolt or single shot shoot lead. If you don't mind stepping down to 44 Magnum, Ruger has made some cool semi-autos...

    recommend a rifle for a recoil-phile

I really like my 600 Overkill, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it for 200 yards. For shooting a rifle off a bench I don't think I would want anything bigger than a 460 Weatherby.

    38 special or .380?

Well according to the Springfield Armory Museum: http://ww2.rediscov.com/spring/VFPCGI.exe?IDCFile=/spring/DETAILS.IDC,SPECIFIC=17405,DATABASE=objects, "The Colt Pocket Model was issued when an officer received promotion to general during World War II. Reportedly, the new general had the...

The C96 Mauser and the Savage 1907 fit all your requirements.

    38 special or .380?

Well, I own five 380s and not a single 38 Special. That's mainly because you can get a 357 that's the exactly same size as a 38 though. Anyway, if I had to choose one it would be the Beretta 84. I would much rather have fourteen rounds of 380 than five or six 38s.

    9mm v.s. 38 Super

In my 38 Supers I can push a 115 grain bullet over 1600 fps. Factory ammo and most load data keeps the pressure a lot lower on the Supers since there are a lot of old guns out there with unsupported chambers that could blow a case at higher pressures. A modern gun with a supported chamber can...

Yeah, I've pulled bullets before. I agree it would be a lot of work, but not unsafe.

    .308 to 30-06 loads

Personally I don't see anything wrong with doing what you were originally thinking. If you take the same bullet and powder charge out of a 308 and load it in a 30-06 all you are going to have is a slightly reduced load. Worst case scenario you might have a squib or a hang fire.
