    Scheels Sporting Goods

Went to Cabela's this morning and it was pretty sad, went to Scheels after a 2hr trip to GA Precision for a rifle order and it was night and day as far as inventory of powder and primers. Prices were comparable, just Scheels had stuff in stock.

    steel targets

I shoot quite a bit of steel as I have about 60-70 pieces now, all AR500. IMHO, skip the soft steel, unless you know it's going to be used at a distance. As the other's mentioned, take care of your steel, hang it so it's angled and has some give, and it lasts a long time. Once steel get's...

    Scheels Sporting Goods

Huge fan, for me they've replaced Cabela's and Cabela's is a lot closer for me. Scheels sells quality kit, not off shore nock-offs. They often have free shipping and they're very quick getting things to me. I've still got my Cabela's CC, but it hasn't been used since my 1st purchase at Scheels.

    Safe or not?

Depends on the layout and the rules. Back before I built my range I belongs to a private club with a very, very nice range. This was the former Hodgdon test facility in Desoto KS. They had major berms for backstops at the end of each firing range. On the 100-300 "high power" range they had...

    favorite target(s)

I'm kind of boring when it comes to target types. Pretty much just AR500 steel and cardboard IDPA targets. I've got about 60 pieces all together; animal silhouettes, IDPA 2/3rds silhouettes, circles, bowling pins etc. I also have a couple reactive targets for practicing defensive...

How Much Land to Shoot On?

Doesn't happen on my place.. IF I'm not physically present, no shooting period. I'm an actual dick about it, but technically I own every round that gets fired on my place. Guys that do come out to shoot are the ones I trust, and have shot with, other's go through a "progression" of...

How Much Land to Shoot On?

As the other guys said, it depends on a lot of different factors IE, zoning, terrain, firearms, type of shooting, etc. I have 80 acres in a 1/4 wide, 1/2 mile long layout. My rifle range goes out to 760yds, basically because I own a small valley and shoot from a hill into a hill: I still...

Mare's Leg: Worth it or a waste?

One thing I learned a while ago was to never question how someone spends they're discretionary income. That, combined with the fact that shooting is supposed to be fun, leads me to believe that the correct advice is to: "Go for it" IF you want to dress up like a 60s western character and...

    Wood Body Armor Plates?

I don't know about wood, but it's got to work better than the life preserver ballistic vest, and easier to conceal, although probably a little heavier.

Rifle optics: a blue collar spending perspective for cost / benefit

I'm pretty happy with it, especially the day bright FireDot, it will help with the deer drives. I also have a Swarovski 1.25-4X for my M7 in .350 Rem Mag, it also has a VX3i 2.5-8x36 in Warne QD mounts. I really like the LPVOs for the woods guns. I'm doing some scope swapping this week. Just...

ATF Raid on Airport Exec in Ark, update

That's not the point I'm getting at (or attempting to). There's a certain amount of folks that don't perceive what he did as wrong, but that perception might change depending on how one of his "straw purchase" guns get's used. I always find it amusing and to some extent sad when folks rush off...

ATF Raid on Airport Exec in Ark, update

There well could be some context that we don't know. It's obvious they'd been watching the guy for a while, so maybe that included social media accounts etc.. They could have had some legitimate concerns that justified how they went about this. This is a double edged sword for the .GOV types...

What new rifles are most exciting to you this year? Or over the past year?

Nothing new really interests me, but I've still got a list of 'wants' as far as upgrades in optics and possibly having another rifle re-barreled. I would also like to get a couple more pieces of AR500 for my range. Of course it will all have to be balanced against an elk hunt this fall and am...

    Bald Eagle vs Protektor Rest

https://protektormodel.com/collections/custom-front-bags and I just gave them a call at: 814-435-2442. and explained that I had he BE rest. I think I had both front and rear custom bags in a little over a week. It was shockingly fast.

Revisiting The Old Model 700 in .270

IMHO the "hold on hair" at 300 for a 3000 FPS normal hunting rifle when sighted in at 200 is pretty good advice for a standard reticle. This is my .260Rem, 120 grain at 2930 FPS: What I like better is the standard Leupold Duplex, because for a lot of rifles the junction is a good 300yd hold...

    Bald Eagle vs Protektor Rest

Another BE fan, mine's the cast iron version and it's had the windage modification. The Protektor guys know the BE dimensions, so it's easy to order the front rest bag from them.

Rifle optics: a blue collar spending perspective for cost / benefit

I've now got 3 VX6s; 1-6X, 2-12X and a 3-18X. The glass is very, very good, on par with my Swarovski's'

Rifle optics: a blue collar spending perspective for cost / benefit

Exactly why I put a $550 1.5-5X on a rifle that will most likely never be used beyond 100yds. You can't hit, what you can't see.
