SP 101 and Federal 180 Grain .357 Magnum Ammo

My CCW bobbed hammer SP101 shoots exactly to POA with Buffalo Bore .357 Magnum 158gr JHC (jacketed hollow cone) round, so that's what I shoot & carry in it. No .38 Special. Shot-to-shot recovery is slow, as you might expect, but felt recoil isn't punishing with the OEM Santoprene grips...

    Taurus 85 owners sound off

Bought a NIB stainless Taurus 85 in 1986 for my then-wife, though I shot it more than she ever did. Excellent, solid gun, fully the equal of a steel J-frame S&W, or better. Later traded it, but I wish I'd kept it. Dunno if current Taurus offerings are up to par in quality, but I doubt it.

Why do guys buy a 357 mag, and shoot only 38 caliber in it

Why do guys buy a 357 mag, and shoot only 38 caliber in it? Those with experience typically don't do that, unless the model of revolver they desire is available only in .357 Magnum chambering, e.g., the S&W 340PD. Shooting .38 Special loads in a revolver chambered for .357 Magnum fouls the...

    Interesting Glock failure mode

Had that happen with factory ammo in a Glock 27 years ago. Glock replaced the barrel promptly.

The 1911 pistol: Obsolete, irrelevant and immaterial

I'm always amused by the yahoos who criticize Jeff Cooper, and who demean the 1911 pistol as a defensive pistol, compared to some more recent pistol offering. Of course, none of those who fit this description have ever done anything to advance personal protection training like Cooper, and...

You mean you think he writes like Edgar Rice Burroughs? ;)

How do You Carry a Revolver Reload?

One Safariland Comp I speedloader in a Del Fatti SLC-2 carrier on the belt (sometimes two), with a Bianchi "speedstrip" :) in a Del Fatti SSC belt pouch behind that. Always have the equivalent of two "reloads-worth" with me on the "off side". Mostly, it's to help balance the weight of the...

    I've come to a conclusion.......

AIWB is the new fad-method of CCW, popular mostly among younger gun fan-boys. Sure, it offers the advantage of a little extra speed, but at the expense of comfort (unless you're really skinny), and at the definite expense of concealability with any apparel other than the "untucked shirt...

Have you ever liked a gun so much, that you bought second copy?

Any gun really worth owning is worth having two (or more) of.

    SA Revolvers for CCW

The old time guys in the 19th century had only single action revolvers, and they certainly learned to shoot 'em fast & well. 'Course, they had no alternative. SA revolvers are almost foolproof in operation, and are among the most solid, sturdy handguns available. Nowadays, though, almost...

GOOD Aftermarket Grips for Ruger SP101

The stock Ruger rubber grips with custom stag & wood inserts work for me. Shooting 158gr .357 Magnum loads with wooden grips is more uncomfortable than with rubber grips. I tried several of the others (Hogue, Uncle Mike's, Trausch, Pachmayr) a few years ago, and found that I like the feel of...

    Speedloader Pouches

There are absolutely none better than Matt Del Fatti's SLC-2 for the Safariland loaders. They're the absolute best in quality, and like everything Matt Makes, of top notch design. http://www.delfatti.com/2011%20Belts,Accessories.html

Feeding a J Frame for Concealed Carry

Depends on the gun and what it "likes". The older all-steel Smiths all seem to be sighted in for the 158gr+P LSWCHP. The Remington load is better than the Winchester, so that's what's in my 649. The lightweight alloy guns seem to do better with lighter loads. The 340PD is most accurate with...

Should Concealed Carriers Carry A Flashlight?

Yes. Along with a reload (or BUG), an edged weapon and OC spray. JMNSHO.

    Why a high bore axis?

Why indeed? The Sig-Sauer DA/SA guns, the Springfield Armory XD pistols from Croatia, various Walthers, various Berettas and any number of other semiautos have relatively high bore axes relative to the position of the shooter's hand on the stocks and trigger. With revolvers, whether SA or...

    Funny little speed strips

"Speed strips" are: 1.) Easy to carry 2.) Faster for reloading than loose rounds in a pocket, loose rounds in a "dump pouch" or rounds loaded from cartridge belt loops. Those are their benefits. The end.

    German Walther TPH

Used to shoot one in the '80s. Cute, but no big thing. A .22LR from a short barrel is nothing to get excited about.

    Taking a gun to work?

Over the years, I've posted this at various times, in various forums, but it bears repeating: Carry at all times unless some external "detector" makes such impractical or impossible, due to the inconvenience or other difficulty encountered in explaining yourself to agents of "the state". I...
