    .357 ok for bears?

A .357 mag with good cast bullets would handle the bears I've seen in Texas. Though a lot of things are said to be bigger in Texas, bears are not in that group. The warm climate tends to favor a smaller version of both bear and deer.

Why was the 45 Colt never chambered in a rifle during the 19th century.

I think the main reason was that the .45 Colt was a proprietary cartridge that went with the Model '73 Single Action Army. Nobody could chamber their gun for it until the patent expired and by then, it was a moot point- smokeless cartridges had arrived. I believe I read an article on this...

    Any rock lock shooters here?

I just acquired a flintlock to convert my Springfield Hawkin from percussion. This will be my second conversion, but the first flinter for me.:)

    ideal 300Yd Coyote load...

Are you planning on saving the hide? If not, any flat shooting gun you're comfortable with'll do. (.243 to a superduperubermagnum). If you're wanting to salvage the hide, a well placed shot from something like a .22-250 is hard to beat. You did say 300 yards, right?

What is the best CA assault rifle

A lever action .357 Marlin, Winchester 94 or a model 92 clone. (Seems like they may hold more than 10 rounds, too).;)

"snake stories" and (do you drive around, or over)

I leave all nonvenomous snakes alone, but not the rattlesnakes. I've had a dog get snake bit and though it survived, I don't want it to happen again if I can help it. There is not one square foot of ground on my place that the cattle and horses don't cover regularly. I don't want them bit...

    Percussion Cap Grooves or not?

I just used Birchwood Casey's SuperBlue.

    Ruger 10/22 autoloader.

When I took mine out for the first shooting session (I bought it used), the first three-shot group was less than a quarter inch at 25 yards. I continued to shoot the rest of the 10 rnd magazine and the group didn't get any bigger. It just kept putting them in the same hole.

    Gun Laws in Texas

Though I'm not sure about posession, I know you have to be 21 for a handgun purchase. That would mean you could not pick it up from the dealer. Though most of the money went elsewhere, you're legally "buying it" from the dealer.

    CVA Kentucky Pistol--please help

I didn't use a metric threaded vent liner. Since I was going to drill the hole, I got to pick the size I wanted.:D Several of the liners in the Dixie catalog were not metric. (Come to think of it, I don't know if any were metric.)

    CVA Kentucky Pistol--please help

Guess what I got in the mail yesterday? Deer Creek just sent me their latest catalog. Their ears must have been burning:D .:D I haven't had a chance to look it over yet, but at least it's here.

    The Lee Lube System

How many folks here use the Lee liquid alox to lube their bullets? It seems to be about as easy as it can be to use (except for the drying time) as well as inexpensive. But does it work well enough to make it worth always having "dirty" bullets?

How to put a gascheck on a non-gascheck lead bullet

Does this swaging die fit on a normal single stage reloading press?

    CVA Kentucky Pistol--please help

The hole in the bolster is too large to function as a vent for the flintlock. It must be drilled to the proper size and threaded for an appropriate liner. It is easier to work on before cutting it off, because it's still big enough to hold in vice without damaging the bolster's threads. It...

    CVA Kentucky Pistol--please help

Before I did any work on the project, I would order and have on hand ALL the parts I knew I would need to test for compatiblity BEFORE I did something I couldn't undo.

    CVA Kentucky Pistol--please help

Dixie Gun Works will sell a bolster that screws right in a CVA barrel and it has flats so you can use a wrench. Everybody needs a Dixie catalog in their library. It contains a wealth of useful reference material as well as a host of products you didn't know were out there.

    CVA Kentucky Pistol--please help

Yes. And I filed a screw slot in the bolster plug so that I could remove it for cleaning as well. That's why I went to Deer Creek. BTW, I first got the phone number for Deer Creek from the folks at CVA.

    CVA Kentucky Pistol--please help

Yep, I used vise grips, too. The bolster had not been properly cleaned after the last shoot on this pawnshop queen, so it was going to be replaced any way. The original did not have any "flats" for a wrench like the replacements you can get from Dixie Gun Works. In an original flint barrel...

    CVA Kentucky Pistol--please help

No. I ordered a couple of likely sized vent liners from Dixie. I then cut off the portion of the drum that extended beyond the barrel profile and cleaned out and tapped the hole. I then installed the vent liner that was the best fit and installed the flint lock. That was one of the nice...

    CVA Kentucky Pistol--please help

You should be able to get parts from an outfit called Deer Creek Products. I found the above reference on somebody else's site (Deer Creek Products does not have a website, I believe). I obtained parts for some CVA rifles that CVA no longer produces from this outfit. I called CVA and...
