    257 Wby

I have a Weatherby Mark V in 257. Pull the trigger on any deer size game at any reasonable (read ethical) hunting range and flop! Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier! It is absolutely deadly and it was Roy Weatherbys' favorite cartridge, nuff said.

    Browning A bolt 22Lr Accuracy

I had the same thing going on with a Remington bolt action 22 a few years ago. I was getting 2 inch or larger groups at 50 yds. Took it to a gunsmith and he took one look and said "We need to clean the crown up." Made all the difference in the world, went to 1/2 inch groups and stayed there...

Do You Have So Many Guns You Can't Enjoy Them All?

Just the fact that I own a particular firearm gives me pleasure. Over my lifetime I shudder to think at the total number of guns I've owned. I now have a modest collection and, no, I don't get to shoot all of them as often as I would like, but I still enjoy owning them and taking them out of...

    Anyone Squirrel hunting?

Still have not had a frost here in SC. Gonna wait for a couple of more weeks, then dedicate a morning to getting the fixings for fried squirrel and gravy. I have a den tree I have been watching from my deer stand and there are 4 young of the year squirrels using it - tender enough to not need...

Have you ever had a “well, there goes the hunt” moment?

Several years ago, while sitting on a deer stand, I developed a bad case of the "runs". About 50 yards from my stand was a sandy wash. When it rained the wash would run with water and, when it was dry, there was(is) several inches of sand in it. The sandy area is about 10 X 20 ft. Over the...

Ever been attacked by something when hunting?

I used to sit down behind my ATV and hunt a long stretch of an old logging road. I would sit on a folding chair and rest my rifle over the seat of the ATV. Any deer that stepped out into the road would stop and stare at my vehicle and, if it was a buck and a shooter, it would be a fairly easy...

What's your favorite lever action rifle?

Model 71. Lots of fun and dog gone good lookin' too! The buck in my avatar was taken with a Savage 99 in 300 Savage, did I say I like lever guns?

    Gun Show Find

Went to the local Gun Show Saturday. A friend of mine, who is a machinist and has made a lot of "stuff" for me over the years free of charge, had asked me to see if I could find him a reasonably priced revolver chambered in 22 Mag. I had perused almost the entire show and the only serious...

    270 WIN Reloading Question

I have forgotten who the author was, but I read an article on reloading when I first got into the game and the author opined that the single worst sentence ever penned concerning reloading was "Use the starting load listed in the manual you are using and work up to the listed maximum from...

    Herters

I still use some Herter's reloading stuff, chief among being a collet style bullet puller. It is the exact same one RCBS still makes. I whiled away many hours looking through the catalog.

    22 WMR handgun for critters

If you run the numbers, a 22 WMR 40 gr. lead slug moving along at around 1800 fps has as much energy as a 38 special +P at 960 fps. The special delivers about 320 ft/lbs of energy while the 22 WMR delivers about 312 ft/lbs of energy. These numbers are at the muzzle. Would you hesitate to...

Anyone else find the look of Stainless and Synthetic more appealing than Blued Steel and Wood?

If looks are the only criteria, then blued and wood. Maple can be beautiful in a gun stock, just look some of the Browning BLR's being offered! They even offer a stainless, maple stocked model.

Horses in NC/SC Attacked by Wild Boars!

I live in SC. I have seen some of the damage wild hogs can do. With that having been said, they are here and they are fun to hunt. A young one provides good eating. If you live in an area that has a huntable population, give it a try and help out the conservation department.

Leupold having problem leading their scopes further into the future

I, too, like Leupolds. However, I am not one of those "Leupold or nothing" guys. I have a plethora of scopes on various rifles as I find no single manufacturer makes one scope line that embodies all of the traits that I may be looking for at any one particular time. Various applications...

Need scope advice for a .22 rifle

Check the various firearms forums on the internet, you can often find a vintage Weaver K-4 for around 50 bucks. I have a Marlin 39 with one of those on it and have found it to be very adequate. Use good quality rings to mount it and your troubles will be over.

    More Little Pigs

Yes, they do a lot of damage. During deer season they go nocturnal, makes 'em hard to take as targets of opportunity.
