    Small pistol primer in .223?

Some pistol calibers using small primers generate over 42,000 CPU pressures. Could small pistol primers be used safely in mild .223 loads? And if not, why not? Just curious.

Cheap reduced load for .308 and 30-06

I have been given several thousand 150 grn 30 caliber pulled military bullets. I would like to use them for some cheap (very cheap) shooting. I have read on a cast bullet site about "the load" which is 13 grns of red dot powder with a cast lead bullet. Does anyone here have experience using this...

Who enjoys shooting real antique firearms?

I regularly shoot my Springfield trapdoor rifles, the oldest one is over 140 years old. It fascinates me to see just what firearms of that era are capable of. I am always interested in any other older rifles I see being fired. I have met someone firing a Martini-Henry, several people with Krags...

Does a cannelure affect a bullets accuracy?

If two bullets are identical in weight, size and shape, but one has a cannelure and the other does not, will one be more accurate than the other when loaded equally? If so, why?

    Reloads from an unknown source

A friend gave me several hundred .357 magnum reloads that he had purchased at a gun show about 20 years ago. All look to still be in excellent condition. They are loaded with round nose uncoated lead bullets which I would assume means they were loaded to less than max velocity. My question is...

    Loading for an AR-15

I have loaded .223 for my bolt rifles for several years with excellent results, 69 and 75 gr bullets. But always used cheap bulk ammo in my AR. I would like to start loading for the AR and have a large quantity of 55gr FMJ and several pounds of CFE-223. Two questions; should I start my load at...

    Fixed sight problem

I have a Ruger Service Six .357 magnum that I usually shoot .38 special in. It shoots about 4 inches left of point of aim at 10 yards. The sights are fixed so I assume the only cure is to aim 4 inches to the right. Any other suggestions?

very old .45 auto ammo, safe?

I was cleaning out some of my old stuff and came across a 50 round box of 45 auto that looks to be WWll military ammo. Would this still be safe to shoot? Or would it possibly have a value to a collector? Hope I posted this in the correct forum, if not please remove. Thanks

Over pressure problem with .223 Rem. or just a coincidence?

Rifle is a Ruger precision rifle in .223. The load I have been using is a Hornady 75 grain BTHP, LC brass and CCI 400 primers with 23 grains of H4895 with OAL of 2.260. Excellent accuracy at the 200 yds I shoot. I have shot about 300 of these and two times before today I had a situation where...

    Praise for Ruger customer service

I damaged a small part on the trigger assembly of my Ruger Precision Rifle. I called Ruger for a replacement part fully expecting to pay for it since I admitted I damaged it. The very polite lady at customer took the information and said (to my surprise) it would be sent to me free of charge. I...

    Ruger .223 precision piercing primers

Several days ago I was at the range and a fellow shooting at the next table remarked that he saw smoke come from his magazine on the last shot. I asked to see the casing and when I looked closely I could see his primer was pierced clean through. He was using factory ammo. He fired about ten more...

    What caused sticking bolt?

Ruger precision rifle .223 caliber, had 50 rounds loaded with 24 gns Varget with 68 gn HPBT bullets. All fired perfectly except for one. That one sounded and felt the same as the others and had the same point of impact. But when I went to open the bolt, it would not lift. After hitting it...

    .223 split neck, why?

Savage bolt action .223 Shooting LC once fired brass (second loading) with 68 gn. HPBT over moderate load of Varget, 24 gns. Neck split on one case, all others were fine. What would be the reason for this? Or does it sometimes just happen? Just curious as this has never occurred before.

    Ruger Professional rifle scope adjustment

I am buying an RPR in .223/5.56 caliber. It comes with a 20MOA scope mount. Most of my shooting is done at 100 or 200 yards. do most scopes have enough adjustment to work for this range or will I need to buy a new mount? Thanks for your advice in advance.

Unusual case failure, 30-06, what happened?

30-06 brass, Hornady, reloaded twice. Has what appears to be a very small pinhole about three eighths of an inch up from the base with a hairline crack going straight up about an inch and ending with another small pinhole. The two pinholes are slightly scorched as if some hot gas leaked by but I...

Problem with 45/70 reloads for Trapdoor

I load light 45/70 loads for my 1884 Trapdoor Springfield ( 405 grn soft lead bullit over 32.5 to 33.5 grns of H4895) A few weeks ago, after firing 10 or so rounds with no problem, I fired a round that had a very mild report, the bullet did exit the barrel but left a lot of unburned powder...

    Question about mounting a scope

When mounting a scope, what is the minimum clearance between the front of the scope and the barrel? I would like to mount this scope as low as possible. would a sixteenth of an inch be enough clearance?

    .308 expected brass life

I have been reloading .308 with reduced loads ( 150 grain bullets between 2100 and 2400 FPS) and necksizing only. Any idea how many times I can reload my brass at these levels without running into problems? How will I know when I should no longer reload a case?

    reduced .308 loads

Note, I am fairly new to reloading. I have been playing around with reduced loads for .308 using H4895 and 150 grain FMJBT bullets. I want to stay in the 2100 to 2400 FPS range. Is there any reason why such a load could not be just as accurate at 100 yds as a full power load of 2750 FPS?

    45-70 case life

I have been reloading reduced 45-70 loads for my 1873 Trapdoor Springfield rifle. I am using 35 grains of H4895 and lead bullets of 405 grains. These give about 1250 FPS and seem quite safe in this antique rifle. Since 45-70 brass is fairly expensive, I am wondering how many times I can expect...
