If you look around a bit you can come up with an used 1100 for under $400, but it is going to most likely be an older fixed choke gun. But a used 870 or 500 is going to be much easier to find for your budget. As far as customizing, it's hard to beat a 870 or 500.

If he is not going to be part of the selection process go ahead and plan on budgeting to have the gun fit to him. Usually Skeet/SC guns are fairly similar. Flat shooting med-length barrels where dedicated Trap guns are usually setup to shoot high and have longer barrels.

Have to agree with this. I am a die hard revolver fan and it took me a awhile to be able to confidently/consistently shoot DA. I carry a revolver as it is what I am most comfortable carrying and worked at it until I am somewhat where I want to be.

I guess I stand corrected, but my LW will do it all day long. I load a single round into the magazine and cycle the bolt and it will load the single round and close the action. Good to know there is nothing wrong with the new gun.
