My latest rendition of the Avenger

I've made some version of an Askins Avenger style holster for a while now, but it has gone through many, many design iterations. This is the latest, and I'm pretty happy with it. I decided to try one that rides higher, and these are what I came up with. Continued...

Showing off some leather (pic heavy)

I haven't been around very regularly lately, but I thought I'd share some pics of what's been occupying my time these days. This one was for a friend's Glock 21 with a "clipdraw" attachment. To be continued... Wes

Lost retaining screw for Novak rear sight

I noticed today that the little hex screw that goes into my rear sight is missing. The gun is a BHP MkIII with the Novak MkIII LoMount sights. By the time I noticed, Novak's was closed for the weekend. Does anybody know where I can find a replacement screw for this? I am sure they can...

Is a non-chrome lined barrel on an AR a dealbreaker?

I've got my eye on a nice DSA AR-15. It's a mid-length fluted barrel, and really blows my skirt up, but the barrel isn't chrome lined. Would that be a deal breaker for you? I'm really not sure how necessary the chrome lining is. Wes

    Need statistical help, fast!

I find myself in a debate, and my mind is cluttered. I remember reading somewhere the stats regarding CCWers and their accuracy vs. police, their record of identifying the correct target vs. police, and the cleanliness of their background vs. police. Can anybody help me find those stats? Wes

Utahns -- is Trolley Square still posted?

I'm revamping my CFP lesson plan, and wanted to include a picture of some "no guns allowed" signs, preferably from such a notable location. ;) I haven't been there for a while -- about 3 weeks before the shooting. At the time I saw the "no guns allowed" ghostbuster signs on the doors at the...

Can somebody tell me what my new gun is?

A few weeks ago this old Smith .38 came into the shop. I had to have it. Looking at it, my mind screamed, "Model 1917!!" But I know that those were supposed to have been in .45 ACP, or other large calibers. Wasn't the 1917 also an N-Frame? I think this one is a K-Frame, but I'm still...

    Hogue "Extreme" Metal Grips (pics)

I found out about these late last November. With my birthday in December, I decided to order some for my BHP. Happy Birthday to me. :) I got a call after about 2 weeks saying that they weren't in stock, and that they should be in January. January came and went, I got an email saying I would...

Anybody have marches planned for the 18th?

It would be a spectacular sight, I think, to see people on the steps of their state legislatures in an effort to show support for the Heller case. Anybody have a plan? Are there any Utahns here than can get Tuesday off for a little good-ol'-fashioned march? Wes

Loading 9mm for a specific gun, would like advice

So I finally read enough about Vihtavuori powders that I just had to try some, so I ordered some 3N37. On the loading end, I'm really impressed with how well this powder meters. I did find that there were manuals that had data for this powder (Speer, Lee) in addition to the data I got from...

Replicating the factory 124-gr Speer Gold Dot load

I'm a fan of the 124-gr Gold Dots. The factory std-pressure load is my carry ammo. I'm trying to find out the factory powder type and charge to make some "clone" loads to practice with. I know it's not exactly science, but having pulled one of the bullets, the factory powder looks to be...

A question for Tripp Research customers

Still considering a wonderfinish for my BHP, and I would like to know more about Tripp's Cobra Chrome. If you have that finish on any of your guns, what are your impressions of it? Does Tripp's offer brushed flats? TIA, Wes

Utah: Come out and play with UDPL -- Aug 25

Next Saturday the Utah Defensive Pistol League is having a Handgun/IDPA shoot. It's more fun that you can haul in one of Kennecott's ore trucks, so come make some noise with us! The shoot on the 25th will consist of 8 stages, with a minimum round count of 121. Bring more than that, unless you...

help: need an OD green 1911

Our Sheriff's dept. has an officer that is retiring next month, and the guys from the department are trying to pitch in to get him an OD Green 1911, and they are going to have his badge laser-engraved on some alumagrips. They originally wanted a Springfield GI, but apparently Imbel is having...

    Ahrend grips - what's up?

I've been on a real grip addiction streak lately, and I find that I want some nice wood grips for my BHP that are similar to the factory "thumbrest" grips. Looking at pictures around the intrawebs, I see some that look GREAT. They're Ahrends' grips... but he doesn't make BHP grips anymore...

    There IS hope for America.

Yesterday a family (Mom, Dad, 4 children) came in the shop looking for .22s. The mother, who I would guess to be in her late twenties/early thirties was essentially the leader, and she was there for probably an hour trying to decide which ones she wanted. Apparently, as her Mother's Day...

    Anybody catch Leno last night?

Bill Maher was on The Tonight Show last night. That in and of itself probably says all that needs to be said. Naturally, the VT shooting came up, and he said that he couldn't believe that it hasn't lead to discussions on gun control. Jay asked, "Why do you think that is?" "Because gun...

230gr Gold Dot in .45 Auto: what are your experiences?

In my 1911 -- which, admittedly, gets used less than my Hi Powers, occasionally finds itself loaded on my hip or under my pillow. I've tried a few JHP loads in it, and settled on the 230-grain Speer Gold Dot, slightly edging out the 230-grain Remington Golden Saber. The reasons for that are: 1)...
