American steel vs British plastic UHMWPE plate vs M80 ball

If you've been following my testing, you've seen this plate tolerate a LOT of abuse. So far it has stopped everything I've thrown at it except for M855 from an 18" barrel. It's rated RF1, so it's supposed to be able to stop 7.62x51mm NATO, but it isn't necessarily intended to do so after being...

Free body armor! (some assembly required)

That's a good idea. Also an interesting loophole in an hypothetical armor ban.

Free body armor! (some assembly required)

I've got some ideas that may help make I a little more comfortable.

Porcelain. These were probably PEI grade 5.

Free body armor! (some assembly required)

I think The Wound Channel did that and it worked for at least .223.

Free body armor! (some assembly required)

This was constructed from used milk jugs and tiles I found in front of my neighbor's house. Will two floor tiles backed by a "plate" made from melted milk jugs stop rifle rounds? I hit it with 7.62x39mm, .223 Rem, and 7.62x51mm.

    Cut shells are stupid.

Yeah, you really don't know what you don't know.

    Cut shells are stupid.

Departments are moving away from the shotgun in favor of carbines. The shotgun will stick around for a while for opening doors and deploying less lethal, but it isn't a primary weapon on every teams. I know you have strong feelings for your shotgun, but folks who are a lot more qualified than...

    Cut shells are stupid.

You can't sling a handgun. That makes it a lot easier to take away from you. Pistols are also far less terminally effective and far more difficult to shoot quickly and well. Cops carry handguns a lot, don't they? What do entry teams use? That's right: carbines.

    Cut shells are stupid.

Yes, and that stress is far more likely to result in a malfunction with the more complicated manual of arms of a shotgun, especially if it's a manual action. Don't believe me? Attend a 3 gun match some day and count malfunctions for shotguns vs carbines. Yes, you need to aim a shotgun.

    Cut shells are stupid.

The plural of anecdote is not data. I'm not smart enough or experienced enough to think that I know better than the experts. If you are, I'll take your word for it, but u may wish to Google the Dunning Kruger effect.

Armor test: 7N6 vs lightweight UHMWPE RF1 ICW

Lol. Figures. Somebody should have a stern word with the OP.

    Cut shells are stupid.

This is getting really tedious. A. My tests are informal and should not be considered as conclusive by any means. That said, they are conducted in accordance with established standards wherever possible and are generally accurate. 2. What you refer to are called anecdotal reports. They are, in...

    Cut shells are stupid.

The reason 4" is woefully inadequate is that people don't stand motionless with their arms at their sides in a fight. You have to be able to penetrate through intervening limbs and through an oblique hit that traverses much of the torso before even reaching the thoracic cavity. I honestly can't...

Armor test: 7N6 vs lightweight UHMWPE RF1 ICW

UHMWPE plates are known to be vulnerable to M855. This surplus RF1 plate was able to stop it, but only from a 14.5" barrel. Can it stop 7N6 from a 16" barrel?

    Cut shells are stupid.

Sorry, somehow I stopped getting sheets on this thread. Must have missed one. Let me clarify: shotguns are a poor choice for defense in comparison to a carbine. They are a far better choice than a pistol. Of course, the best choice for you is what you are most proficient with. The takeaway from...

5.56mm doesn't spread much, either. ;-) The reason buckshot is effective, isn't spread, it's tissue damage. You want a tight pattern to put as much damage into the vital organs as possible.

Yeah, there are a lot of things that are a great deal of fun, but serve no practical purpose. Like bump fire stocks.
