I need an accurate hunting bullet!

I good friend of mine shot 180gr Berger hunting vld's in his 300wsm. On one occasion he shot a wolf at around 450 yards. It took off running. He took 3 follow up shots (he was sure he hit it with the first round) They found it the next day and the taxidermist found three bullet holes - they...

help deciding on a new long range "tack driver"

I have a 90's Browning A-bolt in 270, and whoever says that they're not accurate should come shoot mine (less than MOA out to 300 yards - as far as I've been able to shoot yet). However, my next gun will be a savage/stevens due to the price and the availability of aftermarket parts. The Tikka...

    Ballistic App ?

I used Isnipe on my Ipod touch, and it does very well out to about 250 yards for 22lr. You will need to verify your velocity though, because the 22 can vary a lot. I have Shooter too and love it. I usually use shooter for High power. Good luck. Nothing like striking iron with a 22 lr at 250 yards.

Powders you have given up on?

I've just started reloading this year and I'm done with RL22 in my 270Win already. Did great in summer, but once we dropped below freezing groups started to blow open. Now Using H4350 which is less temp sensitive.

Budget rimfire scope: BSA, Barska, Mueller

I have a Tasco 6-24x42 AO on my marlin 25N and love it. The turrets are quite repeatable (I've shot out to 250 yards with the turrets with very good results.) The glass isn't great, but at this price range none of them will be. When the light gets dim, you have to dial down the power to see...

How many rounds did you load in 2011?

136 rifle rounds, but that was only from when I started in the middle of Oct to Dec, so prorated would be about 650. But I'll likely shoot a lot more in summer from now on. I'd love to shoot pistol to get the round count up. Happy New Year.

First Optimum Charge Weight test, Varget in AR 223

RC and the others have it right. Take this as someone who was just there. I thought I had my load with one test. Was getting 1/2 moa groups in my first 3 shot tests with some charges (I was also doing OCW)! I was told repeat it to see if it holds. It varied a fair bit in different tests. If...

Vote for 270 powder not sensitive to temperature

Sounds like H4350 and IMR4350 are the winners. Is there a big difference between them? Is IMR4350 from the extreme powders as well? The IMR is a couple of $ cheaper than the H here, so it makes we wonder a little bit.

Vote for 270 powder not sensitive to temperature

My groups went from consistent sub moa to more than 4 inches at 200 yards. it was about 20F or so. We Canadians don't shiver much at that temp, so I don't think it was me! (I did try to make is shot as consistent as possible) I've completely free floated the barrel, but there could be other...

Vote for 270 powder not sensitive to temperature

Thanks very much Art. It's really good to see some other load manuals. It's interesting to see that Sierra's max for RL22 is 1.8 grains less than Lyman and my Lee manual. I might have to get a Sierra manual to compare loads. I did work up to 59 grains in summer with no pressure signs, so my gun...

Vote for 270 powder not sensitive to temperature

NCSmitty, Thanks, I've read on those sites, but I'm just looking for some real world experience. Everyone seems to make claims, I'd sure like to know who is actually performing as they say. That's why I included RL17 in my list but not RL19.

Vote for 270 powder not sensitive to temperature

Art, the Alliant website lists max 54gr under a Speer 130 BTSP (which is one of the other bullets I use) for a MV of 3136 fps out of a 24" barrel. If you have the sierra and lyman pages, sure that would be great to post them. Thanks.

Vote for 270 powder not sensitive to temperature

"I'm not sure why RL17 would be on your list but not RL19?" Art, I listed RL17 because it "claims" to be temp insensitive, and it also gives a higher muzzle velocity than RL19. "And I'm not sure why H4350 would be considered a barrel burner" Ridgerunner, I'm not sure either, I read...

Vote for 270 powder not sensitive to temperature

Hey all, I live up in Canada so temps go from -25 to 90 F. looking for a powder that is not sensitive to temp changes for my 270 Win. I've tried RL22 with good results when it was warm (consistently less than MOA), but now when it got to freezing, the groups seem to open up. :banghead: Read...

    Reloading Cost by the Box

Bullfrog, nice to see another accountant on here. I'm a CA (same as CPA) from Canada. In all my analysis (I had to do it before I bought in even though I was going to reload anyway :)) the cheap ammunition (read Federal Powershok) reloading costs about 60%-65% of the factory ammo, but anything...

Anyone Hunt with Remington Managed recoil

I used it for my wife in 270. The recoil is really reduced. I'd say it shot with around 243 recoil, maybe even less. However, she took a buck with a perfect shot right through the boiler room at 80 yards. He piled up within about 90 yards, but not but a drop of blood until where he dropped...

Who has a Hornady Ultrasonic Cleaner who would be willing to run a test for me?

Why don't you try the NRA formula of vinegar, salt, detergent and hot water? It works for me. 20 mins in that, mixing every so often by hand and then rinse, blow dry and throw in the vibratory for final dry off/polish. I de-prime and use a pocket cleaner first so the primer pockets get nice and...

    Cheap rifle scope for .22lr?

I have the tasco on my marlin 22. Shoot it out to 250 yards with room for a bit more adjustment. None of the ones you mentioned have good glass. My brother has a Barska 6-24 scope. Take them both out at dusk or in poor weather and you'll see - they get kinda foggy, especially at the higher...

Plastic Tipped Bullets. Time to see the gunsmith/warranty claim?

When you did it the second time, was the top cartridge missing a chunk of the bullet tip again? i.e. did the chunk go missing in the mag. or when the cartridge was chambered? If it wasn't chipped in the mag, work the action slowly, watching the cartridge being chambered closely to see if you can...

    270 bullet choice for coyotes

sixgunner, you're right, just using what I have. I do have a 22lr, but don't want a 22mag. My father-in-law has a 223 (he doesn't really hunt) that I can probably keep at my house for coyotes. I'll try some with my low recoil deer rounds and see how much they mangle them. Maybe only head...
