    very stupid question

As an aerospace engineer I agree with Husker Fan. A golf ball's dimples work like the vortex generators you can find on the upper surface of some aircraft's wings: they delay the separation of the boundary layer. On a wing the purpose is to maintain the lift or to keep the rudders effective...

Velocity vs. Accuracy - Sound Barrier

Once more: The reason many sources imply a dependence of the s.o.s. on the elevation=pressure is that they give (misleading!) examples similar to the one in your Wikipedia link: In those examples they give the s.o.s. for usually two conditions: - the international standard atmosphere at sea...

Velocity vs. Accuracy - Sound Barrier

Humidity (water vapour) will change the average molar mass of the air and thereby change the gas constant of the gas mixture. Being a three-atomic gas it will also affect the average kappa (as do the other components of air). But right now I don't know in which way it will affect the speed of...

Velocity vs. Accuracy - Sound Barrier

It is a common misconception that the speed of sound varies with temperature AND elevation/pressure or only the pressure. This probably comes from the many sources that say, "the speed of sound at sea-level is x mph, in the stratosphere it is y mph." In fact the speed of sound c is a function...

German SPD pulling an Al Gore?

The good thing about our new elections is that the Free Democrats (~Libertarians) scored almost 10% of the votes. :)

    Ultimate Bug out vehicle?

How about a Landrover Defender 110 station wagon or crew cab? Oops, I forgot, it's not available in the US.

What kind of defensive ammo do you use?

Federal EFMJs in 9x19. They are a leftover from the time when JHPs were still banned here in Germany. Currently I do not plan to replace them with hollow points of any kind.

Are we at a tactical disadavantage without full auto?

Full-auto is for belt-feds on bipods. I was ordered to shoot G3s on F/A only twice during my time in the army and the reserve. In neither case I wanted to, because I considered fast, single shots to be more effective than two or three rounds bursts. The only sitution in which F/A in an...

Is your EDC knife a weapon or tool?

A weapon or a tool? That depends on who's asking. :D

What would you leave loaded in your .308?

If I could find some, German steel-jacketed FMJ surplus. All the tumbling and fragmentation you know from the 5.56 at 2.5 times the size. :D

Safety lever position - Up or Down?

Well, that is exactly WHY I only have a Glock. ;) Ok, if the gun has to have a safety lever I prefer frame-mounted (1911, HK) to slide-mounted (S&W, Beretta), and down-to-fire to up-to-fire. It's just the most ergonomic option.

Swiss do not want EU gun control

*Sigh* Hunters! Are all of them the same all over the world? :banghead: a) Germany is a part of "Schengen". b) Hollow point pistol ammo is NOT, repeat NOT, illegal in Germany. In fact it became legal on April 1st, 2003. c) HP pistol ammo is already illegal in Switzerland due to Swiss laws.

    Best weight 223 bullet?

From what I read above I take that the 69gr Sierra MK HPBT is more than acceptable for defensive use (overpenetration maybe put aside). So my instinctive choice wasn't that bad (PMC with 69gr SMK). ;) How about the 55gr large hollow point GameKing bullets?

    Rules of Gunfighting

I thought the rules were the same as for a successful dogfight: - Be unpredictable! - Use as many dirty tricks as possible! - Use your common sense! - WIN!

Which one is the American Handgun?

I say 1911A1, and so does my brother.

    Interchangeable calibers?

The metric dimension of the .30-06 is 7.62x63mm, while the Mauser in question is 8x57mm. The case of the .30-06 is too long for the Mauser's chamber.

    (UK) Ban All Guns

Considering the number of children killed by drunk drivers, why isn't there a much louder outcry to ban alcohol and cars before anything else? Because much more people drink alcohol or drive cars. Nobody wants to ban something they use/enjoy themselves.

It amazes me what Americans think about the German Wehrmacht. If I, as a German, would make similar claims among Germans, they'd call me a neo-nazi or revisionist.
