No one wants to get shot with either a .40 or a 9mm. Put simply, make a choice. Both, if handled well by a competent shooter, will put a target down. Period.
Glock's are as safe as any pistol on the market. The bottom line is every pistol is a tool and the operator has the responsibility of being safe with it.
I'd go with the .308 based on the amount of data available to give you good ideas as to what to shoot. I love shooting it because you can reach out and touch and have sufficient power to bag it.
Every hunter I am personally acquainted with is respectful of animals as am I. It's important to be so as understand the role of the hunter in the process.
If you own a handgun and want to dry fire it check the manual or go to the manufacturer's website. Most modern firearms allow dry firing with no problems but a few discourage it. Best to be sure.
Like most here I break it down, visually inspect it and clean it. I also photograph the parts so I have something to compare later to see wear and tear.
