    Survival knife any good?

most hollow handled survival knives will easily break off at the handle juncture. the exception being one piece designs like chris reeve does. http://www.chrisreeve.com/onepiece.htm in a "survival" setting i wouldnt trust a welded on or screw on blade such as most of those designs have.

    Where to get steel?

at this point i am doing strictly stock removal so hopefully someone with more forging experience will come along and answer.. i would avoid layering steel unless you are trying to do a damascus or san mai design. anytime you fold steel you have the chance of not getting a good weld or...

    Where to get steel?

as far as i know home depot or lowes doesnt carry anything suitable for knives. for tool steel including O1 my favorite source is www.toolanddie.com i havent found better prices than them yet. they carry two lines and each has different prices...so make sure you compare them for your size...

War Clubs of Skull Island (King Kong)

i havent seen the movie but many old polynesian weapons were made out of shark teeth attached to sticks to form primitive edged weapons. perhaps its loosely based on this?

    Best weapon for bike riding.

i do a lot of bike riding and ive been chased many times and bitten once....by a collie of all dogs . for the short legged dogs i just outpedal them, for the bigger i do what hso said....get off the bike, use it as a shield and try to get the dog to submit. most the time soon as i stop...

    off subject but...admiral steel

just an update... i finished up all of the 1080/1095 from my last batch from admiral...i encountered no problems with the steel after making probably 150-200ish knives. i still havent used the ats-34 yet (im having too much fun with hamon lines :D ) was happy enough to order another batch...

    Steel question

kitchen ovens only go to about 500 degrees. steel needs to hit between 1450 and 2000(depending on the steel) to harden. so an oven wont harden..but it can be used to temper the blade after hardening. for tools you can make a knife with nothing more than a metal file. using a hacksaw to...

    I'm such a sucker for gimmicks (Tippmann's C3)

thats pretty neat, now i want one. thanks for helping me find ways to blow my money :p ive been paintballing a few times and its great fun. i wish i was able to play more often. one thing ive noticed with co2 guns is they say you can fire 1,000 rounds but after a few hundred velocity starts...

D2 steel is different from ATS-34 how?

d2 contains less chromium and and slightly more carbon so it isnt as stainless as ats-34. it will hold an edge longer. d2 is used for industrial blades on machines like wood planers. it has a reputation for "taking a bad edge and holding it forever" meaning the carbides arent as fine in it as...

what do you think of this knife handle?

thanks, i hate scrapping stuff so i try to improvise when i can. one of my little necks knives cooled at the tip a little too much before quenching it and the hamon ran to the edge...so i ground it into a "modified" tip. now i get people requesting that tip style. nice to have a backup option...

    AA Tactical Light, $37 shipped

i might be missing something here but i dont understand if the fenix is nearly twice as bright, more readily available, and lasts just as long, why isnt surefire doing the same thing? im sure there must be some kind of science behind it but not being a flashlight nut im not understanding it.

what do you think of this knife handle?

its madrone burl but the black isnt part of the woods figure. i had nice burly chunks of wood but after attaching and shaping them there were large areas with no tight burl...so i thought i would wipe streaks of superglue on it, dip it in acid which turns some woods darker or black, then sand it...

what do you think of this knife handle?

i tried something new on this knife handle and im not sure about it. im iffy about the way it looks(the color, not the shape) and didnt plan on doing another like it but i just showed someone else and they liked it. so what do you think? scrap the idea or try more like it?

ANy combat pilots out there?>knife ????

Don when you posted that knife pic in another thread i thought it was just about the most ridiculous thing ive seen....and boy did that description add to it! :p bow4828, i would suggest getting a fixed blade if he has room for it. less things to go wrong in an emergency situation.
