    Best Lube/Oil for a Parkerized M1911

When it comes to lubing the rails of any of my guns, especially my 1911s, I just use the highest viscosity full synthetic motor oil (like Mobil1 20w50) that I can find. It gives me the best of both worlds. I get "oil-like" migration and easy clean-up with "grease-like" adherence. YMMV. (pun...

I'd really like to see the Glock 20 in 7.62 Tokarev.

    FMJ for Self Defense?

Shawn, You asked- I said- Wouldn't colliding with a rib at a low tangetial angle be "glancing off of" the rib?

    FMJ for Self Defense?

A rib. Still, I think that testing bullets in gelatin are the best we have. Kind of hard to find volunteers for stuff like that.

Anyone use gear oil for pistol lube?

Possibly so, blue. I've used M1 (and some others) on my guns for longer than I care to think and I have never had a problem with corrosion or lubrication failure. Stick with a good synthetic (M1, Amsoil, Red Line, Eneos, etc.) and it's all good. A lot of folks think that motor oils lack...

Anyone use gear oil for pistol lube?

Yes, it is stinky stuff. Another concern that I have is that all that sulfur, if subjected to high humidity and heat, could form sulfuric and/or sulfurous acid in small amounts. Over time, that could really mean disaster. I can't prove the chemistry behind my suspicions because I don't know...

Anyone use gear oil for pistol lube?

Gear oils have a lot of sulfur in them. When it heats up, it stinks. A lot. I'd just go with something like regular 20w50. It is a lot less smelly and will do just as well.

    .22LR or .25 ACP?

Simply for the slightly larger bullet and the relaibility of a center-fire primer, I'd choose the .25 Out of the pocket pistols, there is little chance of expansion and the edge goes to reliability, IMO.

6" .45 ACP barrel and BB 230grn ammo

Oh, I doubt that it is enough to do that. Even from 16" barrels like the Marlin Camp Carbine, the .45 has enough gas volume to continue to accelerate the bullet- the BB stuff is loaded pretty warm so I doubt that you'll run outta steam in a 6" tube. Even then, there is no guarantee about what...

What do you think of Sellier & Bellot ammo

High quality ammo. Never a problem with it. Use it a lot.

6" .45 ACP barrel and BB 230grn ammo

You might probably :D see a gain in muzzle velocity. I've seen longer pistol barrels shoot slower than shorter barrels and shorter barrels shoot faster than longer barrels- all depends upon powder burn rate, barrel tolerances and Heaven knows what else. Each gun is a rule unto itself and you'll...

    FMJ for Self Defense?

The topic of ammo selection is a sensitive and often emotional one for lots of folks- even if that is not the case for you and me or someone else reading this thread. I doubt that you'll see much in the way of anyone making a huge change in their philosophy, but stranger things have happened...

    FMJ for Self Defense?

Both 9mm and .45 FMJs will exit a human body from almost any imaginable angle of attack and the smooth, rounded nose profile of the FMJ guarantees that either will slip through soft tissue with a minimum of damage. According to the Schwartz bullet penetration model found in my favorite book...

Is a 9x18 makarov round more power or as power as a .380?

No. No charts. I use the Schwartz terminal ballistic model found in Quantitative Ammunition Selection. (my sig line) All that is required is the bullet's recovered diameter (FMJs and other non-expanding bullets use their initial diameter), retained or initial mass, and the impact velocity...

Is a 9x18 makarov round more power or as power as a .380?

OK, so now you have (using FMJs) the .380 giving you 17" of penetration vs. the 9mmMAK giving you 20" of penetration. Either way, both will probably pass through an attacker's body and do the same amount of damage* along the way. (Yes, I know that the 9mmMAK has a "bigger" diameter by about...

Is a 9x18 makarov round more power or as power as a .380?

For those prefering to use FMJs (as stated above) for both the .380 and the 9mmMAK, there's little difference 'tween the two. A 9mm MAK 95 gr FMJ at 1100 fps will penetrate about 20" and a .380 95 gr FMJ at 950 fps will penetrate 18". I'd go with the .380 for its availability.

45 wadcutters vs JHP as self defense ammo?

TT, Well, I don't know that knowing how to work a mathematical model constitutes "expertise", but using the Schwartz terminal ballistic penetration model (found in the book listed in my sig line below), the Federal .45ACP 185 gr. SWC @ 780 fps (its advertised velocity) would penetrate to a...
