    Vintage handloading items, picture thread.

RCBS dies all are dated, Look on the top of the die, it is the number after the caliber e.g. 30/30 FL 72 as in 30/30 Full Length 1972

    Anyone shoot 38-55?

They are a sweet cartridge. I have two of them. A 94 Winchester rifle and an 1885 single shot. Both shoot well.

    Rifle Primers and Powder

If your object is to simplify loading by using the same components your idea is possible. If you after maximum performance, this may not work out best for either caliber. You could use IMR 3031 or 4895 for both and get usable results though. Winchester 760 also. If you shoot either one a lot...

    Nosler Ballistic Tip and Partitions

It is my experience that NO two different bullets will not print in the same spot using the same powder and seating depth. Your mileage may vary.

    357 Magnum Load

Tight crimps are mandatory on magnum pistols! They ensure clean burning of your powder. Try it over a chrono. Tight crimps make more speed in magnums as well as more consistent velocity.

    Trail Gun

I carry my S&W 651 in 22 Magnum. It has served my purposes well. Of course, a larger caliber would also work but with more weight. Life is full of choices, having one in any caliber when needed is better than not having anything at all. If I lived in Montana or Alaska I would carry something...

    Should I buy this rifle?

I have a philosophy about buying guns, as I rarely sell them anymore; Buy it if you like it. It doesn't matter what the price is if you have the funds available. One day after you buy it, it doesn't matter at all what you paid for it if you like it. It is paid for! Obviously if you sell guns you...

    Win 53 vs '92

Isn't the 53 a pistol grip and the 92 a straight grip? I think you could get the 53 with checkering. Longer barrel and half magazine was common on them also. Kind of like a nicer version in the same calibers.

Any day at the range is a good day. I was at work.

    New (to me) m77

One of the most accurate rifles I ever owned, try a Sierra 50 gr. in front of IMR4041. Deadly on squirrels and prairie dogs

    High-end rifle barrels

No question, the match barrels are better quality. You can feel the difference with a patch down the tube. Smooth. Load work ups are way easier as they all shoot better.

    17 Remington

They fill a niche, that is for me at least; I think the .17 Remington is a great cartridge to use when calling predators. You can see your hits and misses through the scope easily. It will not shoot through a coyote of a bobcat at any range with a 25 grainer. Makes a tiny hole and no exit. Like...

What smaller caliber do you recommend for predators to prairie dogs

Asking this bunch what caliber they prefer is like asking a fat guy what he likes for dessert! We all have our opinions, even if we only have shot one rifle! Well, here is mine: everyone needs a 223 bolt rifle, hopefully with a faster twist barrel. Mine is a 10 twist and it can hit squirrels out...

    .38-55, Hard Or Soft?

I just bought a 38/55 in a Winchester 1885. I have only used lead and Trail Boss so far. Nice little rifle with no recoil using TB powder. Eventually like to try Black Powder in it. I have a 24x Weaver on it work up loads because I can't see well enough with the iron sights it has. I can say it...

    Custom Rifles

If you build a custom rifle you control everything about it, the cost, caliber, action, etc. It doesn't have to be a Panda action in a custom stock bench rifle. It can be a 7 pound wood stock 30/06 if that is what you want. Almost every rifle I own is "custom" now. I like accurate rifles, I love...

Would you rather have and why????

Another vote for the .222. But, I just built a Kreiger barreled 700 in one. It is a great caliber, as is the .223, the deuce was king until the military picked the 223 and it became the darling of almost everyone. A hundred FPS was a lot in the days of many people using a Hornet or a Bee at...

    CCI Match primers large rifle

Try your same load with different primers. That will let you make up your own mind. It should make a difference in your groups.

    Seating Die Question

For what it's worth, I fell in love with the first Redding micrometer seating die I used. I buy them for every new rifle caliber I get. They are great for setting up a new rifle, experimenting with different bullet styles and weights. Once you get a recipe that you like, any seater will work...

    New hunting rifle

I bet you would like any of the calibers you listed. The 243/260/7mm/308 case is a good choice. If you want a long action, the 25/06-270-30/06 is a great choice too. Either will work in all scenarios mentioned. get a good scope if you are going to be stretching the range some. Welcome to THR...
