No love for the Vepr? They cost a little more than the Saiga, but they're a heckuva lot more accurate because of the stiffer receiver and (IMO) better quality barrels. I've shot them several times and been pretty impressed with them.
I'd also give a look to the PSL. Most will be chambered...
Armalite makes a good AR15, I'm sure it'll give you many years of faithful service.
ARs like to run wet. To that end, a whole sub-industry has sprung up to provide lube for it. Bottom line up front - they all work. Some better than others, but almost anything will do in a pinch. Over the...
It's not a fast process by any means, unless you give the gas system a healthy squirt of lube prior to putting several hundred rounds down range, LOL. But it can build up over time.
The lube combines with the carbon and forms a hard "crust" when it cools. In excessive amounts, it can hang up the gun and it's a PIA to clean out. Look at the tail of the bolt on a DI AR. That's the sort of crust I'm referring to.
Going from a 16" barrel to an 18" barrel will add weight with no substantial gain in performance.
I've owned piston ARs since 2006 and I think they're a viable variation to the AR. A couple of maintenance TTPs for gas piston ARs:
Don't let solvents or lube get into the gas system. When...
Agreed. I was looking for an inexpensive RDS to go on a non-work rifle and the SPARC looked good on paper. My experience with it was less than optimal. I'm not trying to turn this into a SPARC-bash, just offering my history with it.
When I'm zeroing or have a new load to test and tweak, I'll bag up from a bench IOT take "me" out of the equation as much as possible.
I practice classic positional shooting every so often, but usually my range time is spent on CQM drills with carbine and pistol. I have a 1000 yd range nearby...
Here's a YT video from a year ago of a guy that had the exact same problem as my second SPARC did. A couple of other folks make similar claims in the comments section.

The feral pig IS expanding. A sow becomes sexually mature at 6 months and can litter 2-3 times a year with 6-12 piglets per litter. That's a LOT of pigs in a very short time. TX estimates that upwards of 20% of the population must be eliminated annually IOT control that population. Here in OK...
I respectfully disagree with the recommendation of the Vortex SPARC. I am on my THIRD one. The first one was mounted to a 5.56 AR and the power switch went tango uniform; the unit would not power up. It was sent back to Vortex for replacement. The replacement unit lasted 2 months before a...
Check out LaRue Tactical and American Defense Manufacturing (ADM). I've got mounts from both of them and they're pretty much bomb-proof. If it's important to you, ADM and LT are both American made from American materials and carry lifetime warranties. ADM's adjustable QD system is pretty nifty...
I've got the same barrel set up and I've shot everything from 110 to 220 out of mine with no issues. That includes both commercial and hand loaded ammo.
This says it all, right here. Assuming iron sights, at 200 yds, using a .308 would be as simple as aiming COM. With 30-30, you have to use some Kentucky windage and Tennessee elevation. Simple is always better.
