Accuracy in .30-30 w/ Hornady FTX

Actually I tried. The Cabelas in Triadelphia, WV has a distribution center on the other side of the complex has more stock. In many cases, you can buy on order from the store and then zip across the street. Unfortunately they didn't have any there either.

Accuracy in .30-30 w/ Hornady FTX

So a 1lb canister of Varget came home with me from Cabelas. Sadly they were out of IMR3031 but I still love seeing a sizable stock on the shelf now after those few horrible years. So I'll have to make a trip out to Fin Feather Fur for IMR3031. But I've decided that I'm going to load some batches...

Accuracy in .30-30 w/ Hornady FTX

Didn't know that bit of powder lore. I will definitely get 3031 when I find it. If Cabelas doesn't have it, then it'll just give me another reason to go to Fin Feather Fur soon. Ah, the sacrifices for this hobby...

Accuracy in .30-30 w/ Hornady FTX

Maybe I'll look for Varget and 3031 at Cabelas.

Accuracy in .30-30 w/ Hornady FTX

I have a good load worked up for my dad's 336RC in .35 Rem. I had bought 4lbs of LVR for that and .30-30. The FTX for the .35 Rem shoots nice - 1"ish groups at 50yds. I did that after the .30-30 loads so I guess I now have a lifetime supply of LVR for that gun. they havent had a successful...

Accuracy in .30-30 w/ Hornady FTX

Yeah, mine is micro-groove too. I was wondering if that has something to do with the lack of accuracy I was seeing. I'm basically looking for reasonable accuracy between 50 - 100 yds. Where I hunt sometimes has some long downhill shooting possibilities. I picked this rifle up used about two...

Accuracy in .30-30 w/ Hornady FTX

I've tried off and on to develop a good load for a Marlin 336C (70s era) in .30-30 Winchester using Hornady FTX bullets (160gr) and LeveRevolution powder. I've worked through a variety of charge weights and the best grouping I've come up with is a little under 4". Factory Hornady LeveRevolultion...

    Shooting Mats for Non-Average-Sized Shooters

I ended up getting two MidwayUSA Pro Series Gen 2 mats (https://www.midwayusa.com/product/342825/midwayusa-pro-series-gen-2-competition-shooting-mat) and we used them weekend before last at an Appleseed shoot. The width didn't end up being a problem for me - I could comfortably put out both...

    Shooting Mats for Non-Average-Sized Shooters

Thanks everyone. I'm looking at these suggestions.

    Shooting Mats for Non-Average-Sized Shooters

Do you have one of these? What are the elbow pads like? I am a little suspicious of the ones that look like they embed them in the mat rather than be a separate piece - at least based in the picture.

    Shooting Mats for Non-Average-Sized Shooters

Looking for recommendations on some shooting mats that would suffice for what I'm calling non-average-sized shooters. My daughter and I are going to an Appleseed shoot later this year and I want to upgrade from the rug fragments we used last year to a real product because both of our elbows and...

    Youth Caliber/Rifle for Ohio Deer

Sounds like I need to take a lot closer look at .357 Magnum. Thanks for the thoughts everyone! Any further thoughts would always be welcome.

    Youth Caliber/Rifle for Ohio Deer

Ah, probably posting a list would have been helpful. In Ohio, it has to be a straight-walled cartridge and on a fixed list of approved calibers. Here's the relevant section from ODNR: Straight-walled cartridge rifles in the following calibers: .357 Magnum, .357 Maximum, .38 Special, .375 Super...

    Youth Caliber/Rifle for Ohio Deer

I am looking for some opinions or recommendations on a rifle and caliber that would be both legal for deer in Ohio and have reasonable recoil and other characteristics for youth hunting. I'm looking for something to get my 10 year old daughter started. Being from Pennsylvania, the usual go-to...

    RIP RC Model sad news

Can't say more than others have already said. RCModel helped me out with a few things in gunsmithing and reloading and of course his posts were always must-reads. He was a huge repository of knowledge and he'll be missed here and I am sure by his friends and family.

Advice on deer hunting... Flashlight or not?

Part of it too depends on your location and difficulty getting to your stand. If it's fairly open and you're not going to make much noise getting there, save the light for getting up into the stand and you can go later. I do this in archery season because I hate getting up early and daylight...

Lyman 50 Manual, Minor discrepancy 45 ACP W231 and HP-38 same Bullet

They could also be intentionally publishing "old" data so that long-held stocks that aren't identical to the modern formulations are safe. For example, look at all the caveats that swirl around the .45-70 government cartridge for the same reason.

Eye protection - ESS ICE vs ESS Suppressor

cdk8 - I've been looking at the goggles too. The only issue is that my daughter is 9 so I don't think that operator-style goggles is really the right look or size for her. :) She wears a little pair of glasses so I want something that covers them. Smith is one company I haven't checked out yet...

Eye protection - ESS ICE vs ESS Suppressor

I've been looking for new shooting glasses for myself and my daughter. I was looking at ESS so this was timely information. Do you happen to wear them over prescription glasses? My daughter wears glasses but is too young for contacts.

Giving up on LnL's primer system

Sure, but they are deep enough. I have been working on loads for my father's Marlin 336RC in .35REM. I'm mildly concerned about a slam fire because the firing pins dimples the primer fairly significantly when chambering a round. I know it's unlikely, but I like maximum safety. Priming on the...
