    Bullet fitting question

Huge amount of variables in doing a calculation. Pressure curve, peak pressure, shape of the bottom of the bullet, bearing surface, ogive, barrel condition and probably others. However they may be so small as to be insignificant. Not an engineer by any means. Results of testing could be...

    Low price optics

Unless your expectations are very low you will probably not be happy for the above mentioned reasons. Also higher magnification magnifies not only your target, but, optical imperfections in the system. Any problems with the glass just gets worse the higher you go. I have seen scopes that will...

    Mod 700 to 22 Hornet

The Ruger and the CZ , that I had , both fed flawlessly. The Rugers chamber was long and extra large in diameter. Case lift was short and couldn’t get the bullets near the rifling. Accuracy Was in the two inch range at 100 yards. The Cz shot better, but, still run an 1 1/4 at yards. Also the...

    Mod 700 to 22 Hornet

Winchester did it with the pre 64 model 70, so, it is possible. CZ , Anschutz, Ruger , Browning and others have done it also. However these were smaller actions for rimmed cartridges to start with. As has been pointed the bolt is the first issue. Probably not a huge one. Even a short action 700...

Wanting something for squirrel control besides a 22 and need opinions.

I would stick with a 22 long rifle since noise is a concern. 22 mag and 17 HMR are great for small to medium varmints at the ranges you describe. However they are much louder than a 22 lr. Also, being faster, have quite a crack compared to the long rifle. 22 hornet is worse yet. 204 Ruger is...

    I Hate Rifle "Combos"!

Not for me either. However most people don’t know any better. The setup does what they want , close enough, for the combo pack to be useful for them. They have something that is good to go right out of the box. Unfortunately I have had a couple of guys tell me that they are factory sighted in...

Maximum copper jump to lands in 270?

As troy said maybe a bit closer to the lands. Also what powder are you running at 70% of max? Many powders don’t burn very consistent when loaded down too far. If you are running something slow, or any ball powder, that low I cannot imagine it working all that well.

    A single six mystery

As has been stated those are the original trigger parts. This was converted to the transfer bar system. These parts have nothing to do with the ability to shoot 22 magnum. The trigger and lock parts remain the same whether long rifle , or, magnum. From the picture , it appears , you have a...

How many Ruger 10/22s is too many? Also what is your favorite setup?

Apparently 1. Every time I get one it eventually ends up as the basis for one of the wife's custom build. Her 3 custom 10/22. Me 0 10/22 of any type.

Got my largest buck with my largest rifle

For higher velocity loads I always used 4198. No unburnt powder. Some of the lower velocity loads I tried did have unburnt powder. Maybe due to low pressure. Did have one powder that burned fairly clean for low power loads, but, cannot remember what. Having been away from the cartridge for 30...

Got my largest buck with my largest rifle

Nice buck. Story reads like you’re a little excited and thats great. My wife , who has shot a pile of deer over the last 37 years, was really wound up over the giant doe she got this year. Lots of meat and we saved enough fat I don’t think we will have buy any suet cakes for the birds. Looking...

    round ball troubles

What do your fired patches look like? If they are shredded , or have a hole burned in them, the charge is too high. Everyone else is correct about the swabbing also. You can get away with a bit of fouling at 50 yards. At 100 yards forget it. If your patches are not of good quality it can cause...

    Too many Guns?

My wife’s formula, for the correct amount of guns, is “ All that will fit in the safe +1. Then buy a new safe”. Her first rule of gun safes is that it just wasted space if the safe is not filled to capacity. It is wonderful, and also expensive, to have a spouse that thinks so logically.

    H4350 for .308?

Before you even think of loading read a manual or two. Projectile Weight does make a difference in what powders are appropriate. However there are other factors. Case capacity and bore diameter are equally important factors as well. All influence what the correct burn rate powder will work...

    Shot out Savage 99E .308

It could be rebored to 338 Federal , or, 358 Winchester. I would do some serious cleaning before doing anything. Unless some sort of corrosive ammo is used it would be hard to burn out o 308. Have you checked other basics? Is there an issue with the sighting system? They are not...

Happy Birthday to me! Marlins are getting better...

Very nice. Thank god they got rid of the stupid stamping on the side of the receiver. I saw a Remlin that had been reworked so the action was slick, and , had custom wood on it. The price was right and I knew someone who had shot so knew it was good. Because of the code stamped in the receiver...

    Peep Sight Adjustment

Do a search for “front sight height calculator “ there are many out there. Also directions for the equation if the calculator won’t work for you. It sounds really complicated, but, is not bad after a couple tries.

Winchester 1885 scope mount will not sit flush.

Are you sure that is even the correct mount? I remember , at least some , of the mounts for 1885 rifles being a separate front and rear block. Leupold bases for both the High wall and Low wall are 2 piece. That almost looks like someone found a bolt action mount that would fit and stuck it on...

Looking for info on my father's rifle, and found an ad for it!

Roger Biesen was Al’s son. He worked with his dad and later had his own company. I believe he passed a couple of years ago.

    Loading 44 Magnum

My latest Hornady manual lists 19.8 as a starting charge. Experience with both rifle and pistol show, as has been stated already, you will probably see some unburned powder. H 110 and Win 296 like to run at near maximum . Also needs a magnum primer and a heavy crimp. I am running 24 grains of...
