Thought project - professional reloading setup

Would like to discuss the process of starting and running a production grade loading setup. I see machines out there like Ammo Land and others that are easily run in a garage. Wondering if they are worth rebuilding or purchasing to create a side job investment to hedge bets as I plan...

    308 bullet choice

A while ago I bought some generic bulk soft point 165 grain bullets from Midway. My .308 loves them and was punching ragged holes on my first loading of Varget in LC cases. Don't recall charge to comment at the moment.

    can SP be accurate?

I've shot Dogtown brand bullets, which are lead tipped soft points from the looks of them that I got from Midway. I've had no accuracy qualms with them relative to Vmax's. Ground squirrel's didn't notice either, both Vmax and Dogtown made them splat equally well. My rifle was a ruger HB...

    My first experienced mistake...

I did similar before. I traced it back to me making my die setup round with a primed case. Lost track of that setup round in the shuffle, looking fully loaded, it found it's way into the loaded batch. Now my setup rounds are all primerless so if it finds it way into the live rounds, even if I...

Boyds Gun Stocks + Ruger American (Centerfire) Rifle Compact

Being it's a $350 rifle and a ~$150 stock for a Boyd's, that's still clearly in the budget rifle range. Bit frustrating I'm sure to users, but it seems to be an industry trend of late as I've seen a lot of crappy synthetic stocks lately. And they all seem to really lousy overall from the...

    'nuther Appleseed

My boy is 9 y/o and may be ready for a single day of Appleseed shortly as he's progressing from spazzy kid down to a calmer demeanor of late. I participated in one about 5-6 years ago for both days and was quite impressed. No patch here, but I did have one target that was worthy, but the gal...

    AR denting/scratching/deforming brass?

I had a bolt gun w/o a DBM scratching my brass before. It ended up being the loading flange/guide part of the magazine that guide the cartridge into the chamber. It had a sharp edge that some wet dry 600 grit and follow up with a dremel cured. Wasn't as bad as your examples, just wanted to...

Got a box of magnum primers by mistake.

I'll parrot the same, no discernible difference. When reloading components were scarce a few years back I bought a bunch of magnum primers and used them in my .233 Varmint loads. I didn't notice any difference, nor did the sage rats. Not that they're still around to provide any input. ;)

    Unintentional Discovery

I weigh bullets frequently, to at least check. Not a huge batch of them, just a few singles. I'll than take their cousins, bigger or smaller, and visually compare them to know what to watch for. Then the incorrect sizes get put away and I press on.

    RIP RC Model sad news

Lost a good one there. Really enjoyed his feedback and guidance here on THR. I've been absent for quite a while.

    500 guns seized in England

Typical DailyMail drivel. Policed range bullets coined as ammo, what morons. Guy had a hoarding problem, he hoarded guns. So what. Oh yeah, he was in Britain, that's the only problem I see. He should have sold part of his stash to move to America where he'd be lovingly embraced by many...

    how much ammo?

For rifles that I shoot often, I like enough on hand to take for an extended range session or camping weekend dedicated to shooting without having to reload before I depart. Usually this is only 100 or so centerfire pistol rounds and 50 rifle rounds. Unless I take the AR, then like 200 rifle...

Some musings about ammo and such

Because you can, and because you enjoy it. It allows you to enjoy your firearms hobby at home without burning powder. Switching to different calibers is nothing more than spreading out and trying new things. Do you need to, not really, as you stated, the .308 and .223 will cover about...

    Coated Bullets

I'd suspect this is an issue with double base powders. i.e. Bullseye, PowerPistol, etc. Not certain on Tightgroup, haven't used it to comment. I have left Bullseye in my powder drop overnight and it tends to stick to the insides if left in too long likes its slowly melting the plastic, or...

    Lee FCD problems 10mm

I've had the same experience with my LEE FCD die. It really doesn't do that much to a properly sized and loaded case. It's more of a double check in my experience, I didn't buy any more of the FCD dies for this reason, I saw no dimensional changes made to my cartridges that were fabbed on RCBS...

    What is this thing?

    Gesundheit, I got nothing.

    Bullseye vs powder coat

It's a double base vs single base powder. Double base powders chew plastic up, like your powder drop reservoir. Single base powders can reside in them in without chewing them up. I'd need to talk to a chemist to understand why. It's got to be something with sucking in water from the air and...

    Breaking In a New Barrel

I clean my new rifle as normal. Then I use a double patch over a jag with a small amount of auto rubbing compound. I run run this through about 3-4 iterations, then I'm done, I go shooting. All my guns are exceedingly easy to clean and I don't see any accuracy issues. It's simple, not...

Oregon SB 941 - universal registration on transfers

I like this state senator, Jeff Kruse. Here's a copy of his newsletter. Unfortunately, none of my PDX area reps align with him and are squarely part of the problem. Working Hard For You APRIL 3, 2015 POLITICAL PAYBACK The main focus of this newsletter will be the current version of...

    Can you find .22lr?

Oregon area - PDX I haven't been able to find it for quite a while now. Last time I bought a brick from a retailer, big or small, was years ago, literally. I just overpaid for some off Midway since I was actually able to get some. Did one of this mixed caliber deals. Regardless, it's nice...
