Buying used Henry Big Boy - Advice?

Probably a good price for a used one, considering their retail price. The great thing is that you can probably sell it in a couple years, when a conservative is in the WH, for around $500.

So... What happened to the 'cheap' 91/30?

I bought them in the 80's (FFL) for $49 each. It's a classic case of supply and demand plus the fact that they could be used to drive fence posts if you ran out of ammo.

    Scope Questions

I've killed a lot of white tails and hogs in the 60 years that I have been meat hunting. I usually use a Rem 700 BDL in .30-06 which came with a 4 power Weaver scope, bought in 1971 ( $169 out the door with a box of Browning ammo and a sheepskin carrying sleeve.) I don't remember shooting...

    Mauser 98 build

To Elkins45 We make up a jig, held in a vice, to heat and bend the straight M98bolt handles. We'd load the bolt with a heat dissipating plug and compound, wrap everything up in wet rags and go to it, starting at the knob and going in to the bolt body. They were a little short but they worked OK.

How much junk do you drag to the range?

None. I shoot off the back porch.

    Remlin / Marlington quality

Both Remington and Marlin are very good gun manufacturers and I hate to see silly names given their products.

    30-06 brass squeezed to 270?

Why not just buy some .270 brass and your troubles are over? It's available and cheap.

    30-30 and 200gr. cast bullets

Personally, I would not fire a bullet over 170 grains in a lever action built for a .30-30 cartridge. The actions flex even with this weight bullet. Since they are inherently inaccurate compared to a bolt action beyond about 75 yards anyway you would be adding to the inaccuracy of later firings.

How do you keep track of your data

I find an accurate combination and then, using a felt-tipped marker, write it down on the cabinet doors where I store my reloading components. After 50+ years, I'm running out of doors.

How do you work up pistol loads?

I open up a reloading manual, follow the instructions and shoot a dozen rounds. If they are adequately accurate, I stop there. If not, I try another recommended load.

    Mauser 98 build

I've made this mistake dozens and dozens of times. Having owned a machine shop and had a couple tool and die men working for me, both gun nuts and hunters, we built a lot of Mausers up in many and varied calibers back in the 80's when you could buy old, surplus M98's for 5 for $100 delivered...

    M1917 Winchester questions

If you are talking about the M-1917 (Enfield) battle rifle in .30-06 and carried by our WWI soldiers over in France, I would make sure that it is all original and matching parts, good rifling and a low price. If the barrel has been changed I'd look for any hairline cracks in the receiver.

Looking at getting a winchester m70 Super Grade. Need some caliber advice

The .264 is obsolete and ammo and brass plus acceptable hunting bullets are hard to find. Why would you want anything more than a .30-06? It's the best all-around cartridge you will find from 100 the 300 yards.

So How Accurate is Your AK47?

AK-47? Or did you mean an AKS? The AK-47's that I had experience with in the mid 60's were all full auto. Though they were sturdy and dependable weapons (I carried one for a while after experiencing jams in the M-16.) it wasn't accurate beyond about 50 meters. Of course, it was never intended...

    Help me choose a caliber!

You already own a .30-06. Why look for another caliber? The 06 is the best all-around caliber known to mankind for N American hunting. Save your money.

    Sling Usage In the Military?

First thing we did was to get rid of the "sling" when in the boonies. It was an impediment, could (and would) get caught on brush, made noise and generally was a PITA.
