Very nice. It resembles a fancier version of the Springfield Armory Model "T". A bull barrel target model build for long range matches, released though the CMP. I wonder if G&H used those as a basis, or built from scratch. The T models were made from 24 through 1929, I think.
I have had a .308 since 81. Sub moa, carries nice. Also a .358 of the same vintage for a few years. Same accuracy. The triggers take some effort. The .308 has broken in over time. I would recommend them.

I don't give it long at the bench. I would guess three shots in a couple of minutes. At that point the barrel is warm and I set it down and shoot something else.
My .308 BLR shoots 3/4 " groups with Sierra 165 gr boattails, Reloader 15 near max, Fed 210, Federal cases. 3 shot groups. Barrel heats up fast and strings high right with 5 shots.
I would go for a new 06. Find a 180 or 200 grain load it likes and never look back. If you rebarrel the Savage, maybe .358 Winchester with a 225 grain partition or tsx. Either way, you're good to go.
Got a .308 BLR as a HS graduation present. Have killed a lot of deer with it. Near my 50th birthday, an as new .358 came up for sale. Said to of had only half a box of ammo thru it. It looked that way. Not a blemish. Was a safe queen for many years. Even came with an old half box of...
I think the biggest difference you will notice is between the slim receiver of the 742 and the round, wide receiver of the 700. I always find lever and semi-auto's carry one handed better then bolt actions.
As for accuracy per dollar, shooters have never had it better. I think any make with a heavy-ish barrel will get you started paper punching. A few may not be to heavy for hunting. Go handle a few, no real bad choices out there.
I had been interested in this conversion, but read much conflicting info as to the strength of Marlin actions. The debate centered around whether or not Marlin changed threads and heat treating on .356 actions. And that they stopped production due to problems with pressure.
May be worth a...
