As much as I liked the Olight S1R flashlight, I found myself wanting more. Like most single 123 cell lights, it was designed to be more of a casual/emergency light. I loved the light modes, the magnetic tailcap, and especially the recharging system. I didn't love the small fiddly size...
It has been years since I've done a review so I was pretty surprised to get a message from my theHighRoad.org inbox from popular flashlight manufacturer, Olight. They asked if I would be willing to review their new rechargeable S1R Baton flashlight. I was a little bit nervous about being able...
7Cr17MoV and 8Cr13MoV are Chinese steels.
We need to learn a bit more about Chinese knife steels before we lecture the nonbeliever. Also, CRKT uses all those steels save 440A. Tooling and equipment are not an issue.
I understand how manufacturing works. CRKT chooses price point over...
Who said anything about expensive high end steels? 7Cr17MoV, 440A, 8Cr13MoV, AUS8A would have been acceptable steels for this knife and I doubt they'd have added ten dollars to the asking cost. I've found all of these to be utterly superior in edge taking and holding to 5Cr and require no more...
It is a tall order. Not many large blade folders worth having period. There are two Cold Steel knives that might make your friend happy. More if he is willing to pay up to twenty more for the recon series.

It will not last long. The steel used is basically chinese 420. I had one but then sold it. Loved everything about it except the steel. I refuse to by CRKT anymore thus. A few more bucks in materials would have made this a great great production blade. The custom versions of this are sub-$200 on...
I got one of these last week. Great feel to it. Wonderful grips. Surprisingly above average sheath system that allows for horizontal or vertical carry. Unfortunately, the steel is trash. Can't get a good edge on it. Way to screw up an excellent design CRKT. I'd like a custom SPEW though from...
Consider the Cold Steel Mini-Tac line. They're all subhilt designs with g10 scales. Excellent retention. I just wish CS would do a true drop point. They're not super steel, just AUS8, but AUS8 is easy to keep deadly sharp. I've really liked both of mine, the Kiridashi and the Tanto. The Tanto...
You can make micro serrations on a plain edge blade buy merely running a course stone over that spot a few times. Serrations have their place, but they're nearly impossible to sharpen. Better to have an edge you can maintain.
Sweet! That is very nearly a subhilt. I really dig this blade! I carry a cold steel tanto mini-tac, and I wish they had your blade style in that series. Very cool.
1. Good folding knife. You got a benchmade, they're great. A nice new Benchmade Griptilian would go nicely towards your SHTF needs if you feel yours is already getting crusty. CRKT m16 series are great liner locks. Get a plain edge.
2. Mid sized fixed blade. 4-5 inch blade here. Or close. My...
Didn't say totally the same. Personally, I think I like the looks of yours better. TOPs is a bit over the top. Man, you guys are giving me some serious food for thought on these. RK likey. If I have any monies left over after my next purchases, I see what I can scrounge up.
The Spade looks like it would be a great offhand defensive blade. The KUK looks like it would a wonderful easily resharpened EDC fixed blade. Very nice!
The m1911 knife by Ultimate-Equipment of Canada is a handsome locking folding knife designed around the use the same grip panels as the classic 1911 handgun. It is my third knife to cost me (including shipping) over one hundred dollars. The first two are the excellent Fallkniven Garm boot...
You might want to hunt around for a nice full out knife store. Handle as much as you can. I'm looking to get one of the Becker BK9 sometime this summer myself. I want it for coolness and for doing light brush and wood work. The BK7 is supposed to be excellent too, and will do a lot of brush...
I'm certain, that they exist. Though you'll find far more Smith & Wessons and Colts to hold such work. The GP and SP series have been seen as tough no-nonsense revolvers. They're meant to be shot and banged around and keep going for a lifetime. I have OCed and CCWed a 3inch barreled Ruger GP...
Well, the 9x18mak actually has some sold defensive ammo. The silver bear HPs perform well. Especially, the old 115grain load. I still hear good things about the 94grain silver bear HP.
