Well that makes it easy - I'm done shooting magnum cartridges in straight stock 1885s. It's just no fun IMO.

    6.8 western rifle

    Those shot 1885s are fun, especially if they're pistol grip stocks. I hadn't heard what they did for 2020. I don't need a 28 Nosler 1885... I don't need a 28 Nosler 1885... I don't need a 28 Nosler 1885 :D

You're thinking of the .277 Sig Fury. The one 270 WSM gun I measured had quite a bit of mag space and throat beyond the nominal .270 WSM spec, so in practice I think this is interchangable with a .270 WSM with a fast twist barrel. The problem though is that without a new cartridge...

    6.8 western rifle

Yup - it's easy to get trajectories and windage for pretty much anything. With a copy of QuickLoad you can figure out what velocity will be to within a percent or two. Even if you don't have it someone else can do a run. The only part the average shooter is missing is the ability to merge...

    First custom rifle build

jmr40 mentioned above that the New Haven "Classic" actions are the best Winchester M70s ever made. I've owned all major eras of M70s, and I think I agree with this although in any era there is some variance from rifle to rifle or action to action. In terms of cartridge, the .30-06 is fine but...

Of course. At any distance where a wind hold is required, which in many conditions starts between 150 and 200 yards, literally any shooter can benefit from the sort of 2x reduction in wind drift that a good choice of cartridge and bullet can provide over a mediocre choice.

    6.8 western rifle

Yes, people started doing this years ago. While there are very few shooting circumstances where a 700y shot is ethical, the bullets do in fact give correct terminal performance at those distances. The way you test it is simply to down-load and shoot a gel block close to you. The ballistic...

    6.8 western rifle

You are again wrong. Here's an example of how horizontal spread grows with a 1.5MOA hold (consistent with a not-special rifle/optic and shooter shooting off a ruck) and a plus or minus 5MPH wind call error, which is very possible over concave terrain: The regular rifle here could be...

    Basic question about compensators/muzzle brakes

The bullet comes out very in-line with the bore, and the brake will have a slightly larger than groove diameter hole, so the bullet just flies though it with no contact.

    Cool little find at lgs

Sounds right - the .270 is a necked down/shoulder back -03 not an -06. Of course you can shoot resized -06 brass in one, but it's short. If the chamber follows the brass, the neck will not clean up with an 06AI reamer, but the resulting chamber might still be serviceable. Setting back seems wise.

    6.8 western rifle

Ah yes, pointing out basic facts about how rifle ballistics work requires moaning about "integrity" :D Facts are facts, and the facts are on my side. Wind matters, and faster moving and higher-BC bullets buck the wind better. That's just the way it works.

That fixes a lot of the issues. The case efficiency and capacity improvements aren't as important.

    6.8 western rifle

Anyone who spends any time with a ballistic calculator will see that I'm correct and you're wrong. Reducing wind deflection is VERY useful at "normal" hunting distances. And it's easy to see why shorter, lighter handier rifles are preferred. Anyone who has spent time hunting the canyons of...

    6.8 western rifle

This is nonsensical on several levels. First off, the 6.5CM succeeded because it achieved the same velocities as a 6.5x55, but did it in a short action instead of a long (or ancient Mauser intermediate) action, with a 1:8" twist instead of 1:9" or 1:220mm and did it with less recoil, less brass...

    6.8 western rifle

27 Nosler is on an ultra-magnum case. While I think buying a .277 bore for general hunting is a very obvious mistake when you can just buy a 7mm instead, there is a huge difference between a .270 Winchester and a 27 Nosler.

    6.8 western rifle

The .277 bore is crippled by almost a hundred years of rifle production with the 1:10" varmint twist rate Winchester chose. That was back in the day when they really thought what their customers wanted to shoot was a badger, not an elk :D Yes, the new rifles are fast twist, and yes they've...

And So It Begins - .375 WSM Project

Going that direction makes some sense to me. Not enough sense to tote around a magnum action medium bore, but at least I can see why someone would do it.

And So It Begins - .375 WSM Project

I guess it's about the fastest 8mm you could make other than 8mm-338 Lapua maybe. It'd be a big heavy gun though. With that much case I'd think the factory .338-378 would be more appealing.

And So It Begins - .375 WSM Project

As much as is possible given the gun still has a .270 WSM throat and bore, yes. I made both soft and solid dummies, and they feed from all three mag depths just fine. Very smoothly, actually. The only functional problem I encountered (not with the dummies) was a slight hitch on bolt...

    Midway Surplus M1 Carbine

The thing is, the video game guys are rare. There are a lot more guys buying ARs, P90s, MP5s, M40s etc. because of video games. I see those guys at the range weekly. The guy who decides he wants a second line WWII gun because of a video game is an oddity - I've seen maybe one or two of those...
