    Coated bullets and scraping

This is a follow up post to share what finally fixed the problem. No matter how much or how little flare I used with the Dillon powder funnel, coated bullets were consistently scraped. I believe this is a result of the way the Dillon funnel bells the case, which leads to bullet instability as it...

    Coated bullets and scraping

Thanks for the feedback. I like the suggestion of more belling for the shortest length brass. I have nearly 20 gallons of 9mm brass that is ever increasing, so it makes the most sense. My next task is to get the Dillon powder funnel to stop sticking in the case mouth on the ram downstroke.

    Coated bullets and scraping

I have read the threads on here which explain a little more case belling than normal is required to prevent scraping Hi-Tek coating during seating. My expander die is set with a generous amount of flare, and most of my rounds do not scrape during seating, but some do (maybe 5-10 out of every...

Lee turret press wearing out after 1500 rds loaded

I loaded 10K rounds on my LCT before I upgraded, and I broke several of those plastic ratchets. If you're using a Lee Safety Prime, you might also consider ordering some spare springs. I broke two of those. You might also order the plastic piece that surrounds the ratchet too, have it all...

Best "bang for buck" in progressive presses for pistol

I just recently upgraded from a LCT to a Dillon XL650. I also considered the LnL AP very seriously. I am a cost vs. value person too, but not with certain items. Another example of this is buying more gun safe than you need, even though something smaller would work. It prevents a future purchase...

    Everglades FMJ

If price is a top selection factor, have you considered coated bullets? I've shot thousands of Bayou 115gr loaded with 4.5gr HP-38/W231 @ 1.100 COL. They're accurate, they don't tumble and cost $67 per 1K box. I also like MBC.

    Diagnosing an almost squib round

I check it several times in the first 10 to 20 rounds, then sometimes again towards the end. I need to see what the threshold is for the Dillon powder check die. Obviously it will catch no charge and double charge, but since I was loading on the low end, low powder charge is definitely a...

    Diagnosing an almost squib round

Dry with walnut. But, I had a friend get out of reloading and I bought all his supplies, so I ended up with a big lot of 9mm brass (likely from a brass reseller) that looks wet tumbled because of how clean the insides of the cases are, but I'm almost back to loading my own tumbled brass. I was...

    Diagnosing an almost squib round

Something else that I forgot to mention during the setup of the dies -- I think I had too much bell on the case. I was adjusting flaring after scraping the coating off a few times during bullet seating. I was also seating the bullet with the round nose side of the seating stem, but I later...

    Diagnosing an almost squib round

mcb, thanks, I hadn't considered that. I dry tumble with walnut media, but I have used Nufinish in the media in the past. I also recently tried a light coating of case lube, but I don't think it was necessary or excessive. Perhaps the case had a waxy clump of media in the bottom.

    Diagnosing an almost squib round

The crimping die was my main concern. I think I need to add a little more crimp to account for variations in brass. I was thinking the projectile ended up loose in the cartridge after being chambered.

    Diagnosing an almost squib round

I've been reloading for a little over 2 years. I keep a spreadsheet, which shows 10,500 rounds loaded, mostly pistol. I've never had anything close to a squib, but I just upgraded from a Lee Classic Turret to a Dillon XL650, and had an issue with the first batch. I loaded 300 rounds on the...

    WAOAW Scale Problem

Somehow, I managed to resurrect the scale with fresh batteries inatalled, but I'm not quite sure what I did to fix it. Afterward, I calibrated and it passed. Earlier this evening, WAOAW support sent me an Amazon promo code for 99% off of a new order, so I got a new one for 19 cents shipped...

    WAOAW Scale Problem

I decided to try a WAOAW scale, but it's having an issue after a month of use. It works on the original batteries, but I am having problems getting new batteries to work in it. It's this version with 0.00 grain resolution. The original batteries are almost dead and the display shows 'Lo' after...

    40 S&W X-TREME Bullets

Correct, they are plated. I was referring to the variance between JHP load data in the Lyman manual vs XTP on Hodgdon's site, but I think eam3clm is correct that the XTP is longer and therefore seated deeper at the same OAL I just don't have any XTPs for comparison.

    40 S&W X-TREME Bullets

I have 500 of these to load: 10/40 180gr HP copper plated. Not exactly my first choice, but a friend got out of reloading and sold me a box for a price I could not refuse. I'm looking for a place to start with load data and have a question. I'm currently using HP-38. The Lyman 49th ed. has a...

    Glock 26

I don't see the point of magazine extensions on the G26/27. I know why people do it, and I know I'm not original in my thinking, but if you extend the grip, you might as well get a G19 since the grip is the hard part to conceal. I love the G26. I wouldn't sell it. It's the same dimensions as a...
