I think on the first or second page I had said my friend in Montana wanted a long distance rifle .told him to get a savage with a 26" barrel or rebarrel one where he could launch a .625 BC 162 grain hornady at almost 3000 fps. he loves the rifle
this is easy to say afterwards but usually even with shotguns if have chambering problems first thing is to clean the chamber. I have used a slow rpm drill and the right size brush then wrap it in steel wool
with the right length barrel and slow powder the 280 does come close to the 7mm mag. maybe rem didn't trust their auto and pump rifles the 280 was chambered in kept pressure low
well that is what you get for buying a cheap barrel. oops that was an expensive barrel. you get what you pay for. isn't that the way it is supposed to be?
if you cant use iron sites and your eyes are that bad what can a scope do for that? do eye doctors prescribe glasses with variable power and side focus? if you put on glasses and they correct your vision no problem using irons. many have a mental block
I get my thrills not from killing that much as I like to shoot long range . many times shooting 8-900 yds at the pile of dry dirt next to a gopher hole. cant do that with light bullets. we are told a million times to spend over 1K on a rifle and 600-1000 for a scope and mocked if a guy does not...
a lot of guys get off on velocity but light bullets useless for long range work. to me there is no sense pushing a light bullet real fast to shoot at 100 yds. I have a ruger target rifle and put a 1x8 22-250 barrel on it use 80 grain bullets. cheap way to get to 1000 yds
I have 3 boxes that I got years ago and now I looked for them and midway says no more made only a one time production. got them at natchez and they say out of stock so that is the end of them
a 45 grain bullet going 3500 FPS could easily be outshot past 200 yds with a 75 -80 grain going 2900 FPS and it would be flatter then a 55 at 3300 FPS all the way to 700 yds
