I have a GP-100 with a 178 prefix and I would have to agree with you. It is nice and smooth compared to what had to do to my SP-101 to get it to be decent. But now they are about the same.
I started out with 357 mag and 38 special at the same time. Then I got my Ruger Blackhawk convertible in 45 colt and 45 ACP. My vote would also be 45 colt very fun to shoot and load for.
There are little spring loaded plungers that you will need to pay close attention to. I did the Mcarbo kit on my SP-101 and it made a very noticeable difference compared to how it was new, Have not done it on my GP-100 because its fine the way it is. I just cleaned the trigger return spring...
I use H335 in my loads for my AR and CFE-233 in my .223 bolt rifle, getting good results so far. Just got me 2 more pounds of CFE-223 and 2 pounds of Varget to try in my .308 bolt rifle.
I'm starting to be a Blackhawk addict. I found me a practically brand new 50th anniversary blackhawk in .357 magnum last summer. Then another one in January which is a .45 colt/ .45 ACP with a 5.5 inch barrel.
I just purchased a Cimaron/ Uberti 5.5" Evil Roy in .357 magnum last November. That action is as smooth as glass. It cost a little extra but i'll say its worth it. It also has the original four click hammer.
