Thanks guys, I really appreciate all the replies. Alot to take in, i'm going to have to reread everything again.
As mentioned it's a savage LWH and savage says it's an "oil finish american walnut stock".
When it was brand new I took the action out and waxed the inside and outside of the stock...
What's the best way to maintain a wood stock from season to season?
Last year I picked up a savage lightweight hunter with the wood stock and used it all deer season. Prior to the season while it was still brand new I added a coat of gunstock wax to help it repel water. Needless to say it took...
25 posts and no one mentioned quick load? Wow. It takes all the guess work mentioned above out of the equation and saves you money on R&D to boot.
***Nevermind, I'm now seeing where someone posted a screenshot of it above.
If your not familiar it's an older piece of software that basically...
The 6.5 Creed is a better long range cartridge, this thread summarized. It was designed for this.
For all practical purposes it's a coin flip. 6.5 creed is cool, 308win is boring.
Recoil? My 308 shoots 125g Accubond's pretty nicely. Plenty effective inside 300 yards, hell I can't even see 100...
I did some work as mentioned above and it is quite a bit smoother. I’m not a “bolt” guy but what I found was the bolt has a tab only on one side that rides in a channel, the other side of the bolt just rides on the top of the (what I believe is called the raceway). The channel the tab rides in...
Thanks again for the input, this is a good plan of attack. By now I should be able to see my wear points in the metal, I've worked the bolt quite a bit.
So sand the spiral fluting on the bolt with the 600-1500 grit just to knock the edges down?
Also sand the rails and receiver? Or can I use the flitz polish on the receiver and rails and just work the bolt. I plan on removing the bolt head so I don't end up lapping the bolt face. Really I don't...
This gun is known for a rough bolt and the fluting doesn’t help. Does anyone know of a good way to smooth it out? Has anyone smoothed one of these out? I’m debating polishing the inside of the receiver and the raised portions of the bolt fluting with flitz polish on a Dremel. This bolt is just...
Your supposed to look past a red dot with two eyes open, not through the red dot like a scope (which is why I don't get magnification). When done properly the housing of the optic disappears and the dot appears to be on the target itself. Looking through a tiny objective lense magnified red dot...
Quick range report on my new Savage 11/111 light weight hunter in .308win, and a little backstory on choosing a lightweight rifle. I recently was on the search for a lightweight bolt gun to be used for tracking in the northeast woods, criteria was that it had to be under 7lbs. scoped/loaded and...
I'm in a similar scenario, I worked up my load with BR2's but i'm running low and can't get them locally. I looked earlier in the week and indeed the 200's are the same recipe as the BR's just "not as consistent". I'll be using the 200's for load development and the BR's for my hunting loads.
Very nice!! That's a quality firearm.
I'm new to the lightweight game myself, It's tough to lay down groups when the barrel heats up so quickly. I've read the only real way to do it is to fire your first cold bore round on the same target on three different days, so you're truly under the same...
Go .308, widest availability of factory ammo and it's not going anywhere anytime soon. YOU DON'T RELOAD and you're already set-up for .308, people are missing that! As mentioned above it will also give you a longer barrel life, however be aware you won't look as cool on the range shooting a...
I just got a Savage LWH that weights 6lbs4oz scoped. I read about people having issues with light rifles so I was worried about it but I haven't seen an issue. I can hold it rock solid steady for much longer. It's a 308 and with the 125gr accubonds the recoil is nothing.
This.
I considered one but came across way too many horror stories of not just bad accuracy but terrible customer service from Kimber. Flat out not standing behind their product.
I'm not a gambler.
