    High-end .22LR rifles

I bought a chipmunk rifle new for my 6 year old son 25 years ago. My father had been chief engineer for 40 years of gun design, he pounded on table tops and yelled at 150 engineers and draftsmen. My father yelled at me for buying a gun designed by amateurs with a firing pin galling in the bolt...

Lever action caliber for fun time

I got this 1873 Winchester made in 1886 in 44-40 for next to nothing. The guy's great great grandfather homesteaded the ranch and killed a lot of the natives with it. What a stupid story. I heard MY grandfather in the Alaskan Gold rush captured the bank robbers and was famous. When I got the...

    30-40 krag bolt

Two weeks ago I bought an 1899 Krag carbine made in 1900. I made a one minute video on what scopes will fit with an S&K Krag scope mount. Last night I watched this 2 hour video on the history of the development of the Krag.

Ammo for Ruger .44 Magnum Carbine

The gas system in a 44 carbine is not adjustable. I got my 1961 carbine in 2001. Cast bullets followed by jacketed bullets split my muzzle. I put on a Marlin 444 barrel. Now I have the heaviest and most accurate carbine, and it has micro grooves. Mine was adjustable at the moment the gas hole...

    New scope for 25/06

I built this 25-06 in 2016 on a 1953 Win M70 I had to cut the extractor relief of the breech on the mill. I put a 2.5x10 Nightforce NXS scope on it. I shot a buck with it. I bought a 1994 Browning B78 in 25-06. It was too old for sling studs. I built a forend for it for long range...

    High-end .22LR rifles

If I sort my gun spreadsheet on 22s from cheapest $25 to most expensive $1700 and then look for the guns that have brought me pleasure... The ones I enjoy are between $157 and $450: Win 61 $450 Rem 550-1 $157 Rem 572 $180 I am just too good for the pieces of junk and just not good enough for...

    Very Impressive .38 Special Load

I think there is a good analogy* between integrated circuit manufacturers getting started and ammo manufacturers getting started. The I.C. foundries get going by being on the cusp of Moore's law with cheap memory I.C.s. Later, once established, they move on to more complicated, expensive, and...

    New scope for 25/06

I was at Cabelas in Mt Vernon WA and at State Line ID. I asked the same question of each employee. How can this many square feet of retail be supported? I owned commercial space in the 1990s and got $1/ sq ft/ month retail and $10/sq ft /month medical. Each time I got an answer, I got the same...

    New scope for 25/06

In the past two years I have bought myself 41 scopes. [half of those were on 22s, so I could give the 22s away and are now gone] 43 of my total scopes are Leupold. [Gotta use a spreadsheet] I read the gun forums, other than this one. Leupold is taking a beating right now over repeatability with...

    Wanting to Build Custom Mauser

Sky dog, I buy Win M70s. I still put on: 1) new barrel 2) new trigger 3) new stock The things I have to do to a Mauser that I don't with a Win M70: 1) Bend and / or weld the bolt 2) drill and tap for scope bases * 3) mill out the bolt shroud for an M70 type safety from Wisner [I usually buy a...

    Wanting to Build Custom Mauser

Varminter is right about everything. I have been sporterizing Mausers for 52 years and it is never worth it. You have to want to do it. I consider that the worst book I ever read.... not really a book, more like lecture notes of bad ideas that were never edited. I am highly suspicious that...

    Limbsaver rotting away

I build 3 or 4 rifles a year and buy some factory rifles. They all get Limbsavers. Never had a problem.... except with my friend that buys double rifles and shoots elephants. He is disgusted with me not trimming to fit. I want more recoil pad area....I am an engineer, not a costume designer.
