Marlin lever vs Henry lever action

I keep reading these nightmare stories about Marlins and I'm left scratching my head. I've owned many over the last 30 years, different calibers & models from different eras. From .17 through .45-70. I've never had problems with any of them, so maybe I've just been particularly lucky with...

    Cleaning frequency of 17 HMR, 17 Mach2, and .22LR?

I think this about sums it up for me too. Same goes for my .17WSM

    Bug-Out/Emergency or Truck/Car Rifle

Well, I've lived in the same home for 50+ years and have never had a situations that called for bugging out. Also, in NJ, traveling with a firearm is highly regulated and restricted even during a storm or crisis. So unless I'd be heading out of the state altogether, is just not worth it. The...

Have I found the dirtiest .22LR ammo out there?

Thanks to everyone for all the great feedback and suggestions. I've had bad experiences with Thunderbolts too, they've really earned their bad reputation. I'm not familiar with a few of the brands you guys have mentioned, so I'll now know to probably avoid them when I see them.

Have I found the dirtiest .22LR ammo out there?

It really didn't smell any different from my other .22 ammo, both while shooting & cleaning afterwards. It also didn't have any peculiar or unusual primer aroma, like Aguila sometimes has.

Have I found the dirtiest .22LR ammo out there?

I went to the range this past weekend to shoot off some old shotgun ammo. I also had my freshly cleaned Savage 64 that I picked up slightly used a few weeks ago with me. I had some Sellier & Bellot 40grn subsonic on hand that I got on clearance earlier this year. Never tried that brand before...

What is your favorite rifle to hunt with?

While not always the one I take out with me as I try and rotate through the calibers a bit, I have to give the nod to my Marlin 336 in .30-30 during most deer seasons. While my bolt actions in .243, .270, .308 and .30-06 have served me well, as a matter of personal choice, that lever action...

This is possibly the coolest rifle in the history of the universe

I never knew something like this existed as a functional rifle. This has inspired me to ask for help in designing a quad barreled bolt action, but in a lighter recoil caliber. I figure we should do it in 6.5 Creedmoor. A) It would be an awesome rifle to see in reality. B) We would get to see...

    Old Ammo

As expected, no issues with the 27yr old shotgun shells. As others have chimed in, plastic hulled shells should last a looong time. Also had my XT-22 TR with me for some scope adjustments, so fired off a box of Wicnchester Super X 22 Longs that were my father's from about 1970. They all went...

    Old Ammo

Well, I'm heading to the range tomorrow with a Mossberg 195 I bought a few weeks ago. Found about 40 Winchester Ranger reduced recoil 00 buckshot shells in my shop cabinet that are about 27yrs old. Stored well and all look as good as new. I also found some 40+ yr old Remington #4 buckshot, but...

    old reliable get new look

I had to chuckle at myself a litlle at this. I know it's just a matter of individual preference, but on my few levers that have straight grips, ala my 1894 and one of my Henry's, I've been wanting to do the exact opposite and customize them by replacing the straight grips with curved grips to...

    Favorite .22LR automatic rifle that's not a 10/22?

Ordinarily, I would've just chimed in with the others who've suggested a Model 60. I love mine. But a few weeks ago, I picked up a barely used Savage 64, with a nice wooden stock, no iron sights though, but I threw a nice scope on it, and it's been a fun little tack driver. If you can find one...

    water in .223 barrels?

When I went to boot camp in 87', and then stateside training & deployments through the early 90s. I think we were among the last generations to be training with the A1s before the A2s were implemented everywhere else. Went through the same training with them you just described, clearing after...

Guns you thought you'd regret selling but didn't

I haven't sold too many of my guns, but the few I did, well it was usually because I've hit patches in life when money was scary tight. I've regretted most of those sales. Except for my Remington 870 Express. Nothing against the gun, it was beautiful and flawless. But I've never regretted...

    Marlin XT 22VR

I still have a can or two of Brasso that I've had since boot camp back in 87', which was a staple in every PX and foot locker at the time Amazing how that aroma can take you back in time. They still sell it, but I've read they changed the formulas in the early 2000s so it'll be less likely to...

22LR “long range” with iron sights

Before my eyes started going to pot, I was getting pretty good at guesstimating the bullet drops out to about 150-175yrds on the metal plates - so long as there was zero, and I mean zero, crosswind or headwinds. Just the slightest breeze would throw it off, and I never got the hang of windage at...

    Marlin XT 22VR

Nice set up. I have the XT-22 TR, and it's a fantastic, reliable, accurate rifle. I think the XT series as a whole, in .22LR, .22M & .17HMR, is a very underrated line, especially if you've got some well suited ammo. For general plinking and critter control, they hold their own against CZs just...

    Floridian's Felons?

@MedWheeler Thanks for finding that. In all the discussions over bump stocks & 18 vs 21, that new waiting period kind of went under the radar without a lot of mention. Good to know it's an actual statue and not some arbitrary store policy after all.

    Floridian's Felons?

There might be more details for that father than what you provided, but it sounds more like a store based delay rather than a waiting period. It's not the law, but stores can make policies, including delays, to ensure that every sale they make is by the book. When there's a NICs issue or...

Interesting .308 Win vs. 6.5 Creedmore

As we continually debate the 6.5CR vs. .308 superiority, some munitions engineer is out there working out something like necking down a .338LM to 6.75mm for factory loads, overbore be darned. Over the next 20yrs, I'll hopefully be running my .308s just fine. I'll maybe even come around to the...
