I have a HK45C which may fit your bill, as long as you don't mind the price and want a compact and not a sub-compact. It's expensive, but shoots like a dream. I also live in NJ now and can't carry, but the HK45C is a keeper.

I never shot one, but was looking at buying one and just couldn't get a good grip on it. Even though I didn't need a CCW, I picked up the HK45c which feels and shoots great. Make sure you can grip it OK before buying.

Look at the Kahr line of metal autos. I had a MK9 which is their smallest (3" barrel if I remember) which handled recoil pretty nicely for such a small gun. Stepping up to their 4" barrel model (K9 I think) may give you exactly what you need.
