One Load for the One Rifle Philosophy

I'd do 180 soft points of some sort out of a 30-06 if I can only have one caliber/load, bolt rifle. I think there are better calibers for specific applications, but as a do-all you aren't going to do better than a 30-06 pitching 180 pills.

    New AR question……..

I think you can save money by building your own plus you get exactly what you want from the start.

    Weatherby Mark V

I have a Mark V in 300 Wby that's a really nice rifle. My dad bought it years ago for some hunts we went on but it's had very few rounds through it. It's really more gun than I need most of the time and I have lighter and handier rifles that are more pleasant to carry.

    Best budget red dot?

Sig Romeo 5. It has shake awake which works really well, and it seems like well put together unit for the price. With the high mount it will co-witness the irons. Probably $125ish.

    300 RUM recoil

My 300 Wby sucks to shoot at the bench, I imagine a RUM would be just a bit worse. A brake would help but mind your ears.

Recommend a new rifle caliber for me

If you aren't shooting over 200 yards a 30-30 would be a great choice, with the fun factor of a lever rifle. My 94 carries better than any other rifle I own although if you're going to scope it a Marlin is an easier option (I own both - prefer the 94 but the 336 is a better practical hunting...

Ever notice this about striker fired pistol trigger reviews?

My original Shield trigger is pretty poor. I won't change it, it's fine for a carry pistol, but it isn't a great trigger by any stretch. The 2.0 M&P triggers I have are much better. I haven't tried a Shield Plus but I like the move away from the hinged trigger setup. I have several double...

    Ruger American Models

I think the 7mm-08 is a better hunting round. Minimally more recoil but better performance at hunting distances, plus with more upside if you do want to dip into elk size game or larger with heavier bullets. The efficiency advantage the 6.5 has doesn't show up until you're well beyond ethical...

    Effective range for 6.5 Grendel?

I doubt that bullet would still be going 2000 fps at 300 yards out of a 20" barrel, but that's probably still a good ballpark number for max range on a deer. Maybe 250 if you're a little more conservative. Any of the AR platform calibers have some limitations in hunting applications relative...

    338 Win Mag reduced power

I'm not a handloader so I don't know if this works, but can you just reduce the powder charge down to a 338 Federal level and get the same result from a 338 WM case? My other take is that reducing the power only addresses one issue. The other issue is you're still lugging around a large and...

    6.5 Creed for Elk?

I've got a 7mm-08 that I feel is somewhat borderline for an Elk, I usually carry a 30-06 or 300 mag when I'm elk hunting. I think a 6.5CM is doable but it's lighter than I'd want. Just my opinion.

Gutting / Gralloching / Whatever you call it

Gutless is the way I've done it for several years. I find it a lot cleaner and easier, and I don't care about leaving the ribs. Plus where we hunt we generally have to carry out game on our backs, so it just makes sense to use the gutless method since we have to break the animal down in the...

Who said the 6.5 Creedmoor was the Bare Minimum for Deer

I prefer 7mm-08 mostly because I've had good experiences with it, but the difference on deer is probably meaningless. I do think the 7mm-08 has a bit of an edge on something like an elk.

    Enlighten me on the 7mm-08

I have a Model 7 in 7mm-08 and it's become about my favorite hunting cartridge. It's ideal for deer and even works really well on elk. Very little recoil but really good ballistic performance. It isn't quite as efficient as a 6.5 Creedmoor and it shows at really long distances, but at all...

    REM 700 slam fire.

I've never had an issue with the original triggers, but I have two 700 action rifles and both have had replacements done. One was done by Remington and I stuck a Timney in the other. The factory swap wasn't too big of a hassle but I did have to remove the scope and pack it up and ship it. The...

    180gr 30-06 on deer experience?

I like shooting 180 grain out of my 30-06 but realistically for deer anything in the 150-180 range would be fine. I think the 180 grain is a really good match for a 30-06 for many of the reasons outlined by jmr40 above. But again on a deer any kind of decent soft point out of a 30-06 will work...

    NEW! Remington Core-Lokt Tipped

I use higher end bullets for hunting these days, but I've killed more game with the old pointed soft point core-lokt's than anything else. They work great.

    Kids & Initial Firearms Exposure

Totally depends on the kid. My 11 almost 12 year old enjoys shooting 22 and AR rifles and has for a couple of years, and she's pretty good at it. My 9 year old hasn't really been interested to do much beyond shooting a BB gun a few times. My 6 year old...we'll get there. I have an 11 year...

    Ruger 9mm Carbine Defense?

I'd much rather have a 9mm PCC like the Ruger than a pistol for HD. I think longer weapons in general are better for most people because they're far easier to shoot accurately especially when you exacerbate a situation with stress. That said I'm still in the camp that prefers a rifle caliber...
