LMT blowout deal on LM308 South America contract overruns

It's pretty simple- buffer weight, and spring construction. Conduct an experiment for me, if you will - gut your buffer in your .308AR. Take everything out of it, and shoot it. Tell me how "over-gassed" you think it is then. When your gas system hasn't changed one single bit. That would...

    .308ARs, Armalite/DPMS

I'm about to get hip-deep in the .308AR stuff, and I'll start with the recoil systems, because the biggest problems with functional problems on these large-frame platforms are with the recoil system. Period. I'll start with some bad information I saw here: There are three major (and many...

LMT blowout deal on LM308 South America contract overruns

Most .308ARs are shipped with a junk recoil system, that is not up to the task of handling the cartridge - and most .308AR owners think that means it's "overgassed." More often than not, that isn't the case, at all, and the true problem isn't diagnosed correctly in the first place. "Adjustable...

338LM Barrett MRAD, first shot @ 845 yards

My Spring Shoot out here in the Desert Southwest is coming up in two weeks. We'll have a .50BMG bolt gun out here this time. Expect much more info from this shoot, since it's concentrated on long distance and high angle. Here's the initial fire on the .50, a few weeks ago... Watch that pile...

    .308ARs, Armalite/DPMS

I will get into that, in excruciating detail,... and make it all simple. It's really not that hard when you follow a few simple basics. You deviate from those basics, even by 0.100" here or there in recoil systems, or 0.010" on gas port sizing in the barrel - you jack up a gas tube by 3/16" -...

The larger the bore, the faster the bullet?

If I can find .308 and .338 projectiles that are the same weight, I'll make up loads for them and try it out. Getting them to the same muzzle velocity will require different powder charges - that's a given. The same powder charge is not going to launch both projectiles at the same velocity...

    .308ARs, Armalite/DPMS

I'll get to some of that info, certainly.

    .308ARs, Armalite/DPMS

I swear I mentioned this gun before, here, but I can't find my reference to it anywhere now. I mentioned a DPMS-based receiver set running all-Armalite guts, and it runs like a champ. I built an Aero Precision M5 receiver set (upper, lower, rail) and only used Armalite AR-10 internals (recoil...

20 MOA Rail and Close Range Shots

This hits it. I haven't seen too many scopes out there that only have 40 MOA of adjustment, only. If you find one like that, just avoid it. Most modern scopes have alot more than that, and you'd easily be able to adjust up to get the zero you need or want, with a 20 MOA integrated (mount or...

The larger the bore, the faster the bullet?

Figured I'd toss these two in here, since these are the ones I'm talking about. .308 Win on top, .338 Fed on bottom. Almost identical. P1060969 by 98Z posted Feb 28, 2019 at 9:18 PM

The larger the bore, the faster the bullet?

Almost identical. 16" barrels, midlength gas, 1~4 scope on one, 1~6 on the other. Both running AR-10 Carbine recoil systems, both rails are similar, same brake on both. Damn near twins.

You have a .338 Fed? I'm just asking.

The larger the bore, the faster the bullet?

Not with mine. I don't shoot factory ammo, and only handload. My range-trash .308 Win is a 150gr Hornady FMJ-BT, and good loads are 178gr Hornady HPBT and 195gr Hornady HPBT. My .338 Fed Loads are 200gr Hornady SSTs and 225gr Hornady SSTs. The projectile weight difference in those loads is...

338LM Barrett MRAD, first shot @ 845 yards

Here's something that me and my Shoot-Brother From Another Mother do every time... We've since dialed this up tothe 450 at night, no-illum, together, and the 845 during the day. We're just "timed" and pull this stuff off. Love this shooting partner...

338LM Barrett MRAD, first shot @ 845 yards

Here's an example of the 45/70 recoil, at night - great pic, and not by me. One of the guys out there captured this one:

338LM Barrett MRAD, first shot @ 845 yards

I have the distance to go out to 2200 yards, with a solid backstop. I just don't have anything that will get that far. Yet. My Spring Shoot is coming up in 2.5 weeks, and we're going 1300 yards on long day. High-angle day will see shots in excess of 40 degrees down. We'll see how this goes...

338LM Barrett MRAD, first shot @ 845 yards

No, not at all. This is the FallShoot I host every year. The night prior, we taught all the ranging distance classes, wind reading classes, and this was the next day out on the long-ish distance range. The was the biggest rifle we had, so I re-zero'd it for 500 yards for the owner, and shot...

The larger the bore, the faster the bullet?

I'm sure the scientists will figure that out, and what the reason is - but that's something for them to look at. The recoil is less on the .338 Fed, over the .308 Win, both guns set up the same. Shocked me, when I took it out for the first time. When I take them out, with new shooters now...
