    Is this a surplus action?

I disagree. As I said, they WERE military M48s as evidenced by the majority having stepped barrels and military sights along with the Yugo crest and either M48 or M48A on the receiver ring. Some stocks are actually converted military with the butt sling hole filled. Think what you want, but I...

    Is this a surplus action?

They are most certainly M48s reconfigured into sporters, most with new barrels (both military stepped and sporter taper) and almost new receivers. The stocks can be converted stock military or new sporter with some military features such as the rounded grip and grasping grooves. Barrels are...

    Is this a surplus action?

Cabelas had a bunch of these M48s and I bought one. What I have seen on their racks are different mixes of sporter barrels, military stepped barrels, D&Td and not, milled & stamped floorplates, M48 & M48A receivers, & various stock designs yet all are beech. Looks to me that Zastava was getting...

    Walking in the woods rifle

Here's my 2 cents..... A JM Marlin 336/Glenfield 30 with the 2/3 magazine (for weight reduction) 30-30 170gr ammo is about $16 a box for Rem and $12 a box for Privi. Both good Or a Mini 30. They dont like the imported steel cased ammo with misfires due to the hard primer. Domestic, or Privi...

Zastava USA hints at LH Mauser availability

It's about time they stopped monkeying around with Chas Daly, Remington, Interarms, etc and sell them themselves. Their M70 is a good rifle.

    Small vs large ring

That is not off of a Spanish anything. It's from a 1936 Mexican which is a small ring 98. There was no Spanish 1936. The photo of the action appears to be a Mexican, either 1910 or 1936. The cocking piece should work with your 98 large ring. I say "should" but it all depends on the cuts in the...

    VZ24 metallurgy

In my study of the 98, I have wondered about the metallurgy of the 1930s made VZ24 vs the German k98 of the same time frame. Why is the VZ24 action held in higher regard than the k98 ? Is it the finish, the material, or the heat treating ? Or is it a reputation such as the 09 where so many...

    Gunsmith budget punches

Whatever you decide to buy, stay away from Harbor Freight for punches. They will spaghetti the first time they are used. Way too soft.

    Mauser Compatibility

That rifle has an 1893 action, so parts for the 93 & 95 will work. Spanish receivers tend to have a reputation for being soft. The first thing you should do however, is to invest in no go and field headspace gauges. One never knows what headspace issues might be hidden in these old receivers.
