    Burn Rate Chart Inconsistencies

I use burn rate charts as a starting point and then research the loading manuals for the cartridges I load and see which powders are faster or slower. To me, if a load reaches max before another powder reaches max, then it is faster. If more powder is needed to reach max than another powder...

What was your first marksmanship badge of honor? .....

At age 11 back in the mid '60s at school camp we shot hand-thrown clay targets with a single shot 22 and crimped shot loads. I went 5 for 5. Of course I had already been hunting with a shotgun for three years at that point, so understood lead pretty well.

Need starting load suggestions 454 Casull with powder coated lead 285gr FN-FB bullets.

With powder coated bullets the hardness of the bullets makes little difference. They should not lead the barrel at 1500 fps. But a real nice load with your Accurate #7 is 15.5 - 16.0 grains under that Magma bullet of yours @ 1.68 inches. Should be around 1100 fps out of your X.

Need starting load suggestions 454 Casull with powder coated lead 285gr FN-FB bullets.

You start out by saying "starting loads" but then suggest 231 for a light starting load. 231 is a relatively fast powder and will max out on pressure before you even get to starting loads for a powder that will give max velocities. It would really help to know what powders you have on hand to...

    .44 mag 240grn swc

I like 9.0 gr. of HP38 (W231) for about 1050-1100 fps depending on barrel length. This is where the pressure was enough to shoot clean, lighter loads left a lot of soot on the cases.

    Power Pistol Alternatives

Vihtavuori N340 is very close to the same burn rate as Power Pistol and usually available. Used to be VV powders were the most expensive, but now others have risen past them so at $40 a pound they aren't too bad, and it's great powder.

    Ramshot Enforcer for .45 Colt

With slow powders it's almost pointless to load in .1 or even .2 grain increments. Even .3 gr. increments only give 15 fps spreads. With 4227 you won't reach max pressure before you can't get any more in the case, too bulky. You'll like Enforcer, I've loaded lots of 4100 and it burns very...

    Economics of Reloading

I've been reloading for over 43 years, and am still using the original press, powder measure, scale and case prep kit I bought back at the beginning, so low cost. Add in 7 or 8 more sets of dies and a few new gizmos and I'm still well under a grand for equipment. Now if you include bullets...

    Registered Magnum appreciation day !

I had an original 5" registered magnum built in 1939, but it was stolen when my house was burglarized while I was away at work. It had the most beautifully checkered top strap to minimize glare and balanced like the Flying Wallendas. I sure miss that beauty.

Accura .429 240 gr. Plated HP

I have found these slugs to be very accurate in my 629 with a variety of powders at from 1,000 to 1,100 fps. Has anyone tried them on game? How do they expand, and how much do they penetrate?

    What's your favorite hunting knife?

My favorite factory knife for larger game is this Western F66 Black Beauty. This Camillus #1011 is great for smaller game like ducks and quail. After hunting for around 50 years I finally had a custom made to my specs in a high hardness stainless steel. It will field dress a half dozen deer...

    New 2023 br chart...

Yes, at least in 44 mag and 45 Colt, both Silhouette and True Blue are much slower than listed, right in there with Herco and N340. Longshot is always listed as slower than in actual practice.
