I had a firearms instructor who said,
Shoot everything. ... then buy what you like and carry it. Build the clothes or the purse around the gun.. not visa versa...
I carry a 14-45 LDA Para.. that is a double stack full sized .45 if you did not know. In every situation for which I have...
I feel like....
a lion in a den of Daniels!
I have owned CZ and Springfield and PAra Ordnance and cannot say enough good things about them. CZ40B was a 1911 style .40 S&W, Springfield was a compact SA and my Para is an 14-45 LDA. All of the above had some issues, but the FUN is to LEARN how...
Clays....
Murph.. I use exactly what Hogden said on their site

230 gr = 4.0 gr Clays
I'm REALLY happy with it.:D

Walt is COmpletely correct
Get a trainer.. a REAL trainer. I lucked out and met a retired Quantico (FBI) range officer who was quite brittle. Rude is better and more accurate.
I had to fire all his weapons before he was satisfied that I could "understand HIM". I then was allowed to shoot my...
HSMITH you are right!
I bought some CLAYS (could not locate any 231) and it does burn cleanly. I also discovered by accident that AA#2 in tiny doses is quite clean.. no.. very clean.. and it lives up to its name ACCURATE. Clays does so well with 230 gr LRN that I may just keep shooting that...
:banghead: I bought a new Para Ordnance 14-45 LDA and started the ritual of finding out what it likes to eat and spit out. I have found it LOVES AA#2 for 185 gr JHPs, Bulls Eye for LRN 230 gr., and Hogdon Universal for all FMJ (works great with Golden Sabers (230 gr version).
Question: I...
Gent's even .45s
have issues. In 1992 I walked into a room where a friend had an AD 6' from me with a 230 XTP and I was in the way. Lost 5" of femur in a split second and had a steel insert for 12 years..
I caught it square. It hurt BAD, but it was not my day to die. On the other hand, my...
Here is my carry rig
I am a wierdo, I guess. I carry a Para Ordnance 14-45 LDA with a 14 round mag and one in the pipe. The appropriate IWB makes this a carry-able rig even under 100° Florida sun under a loose shirt (one of those Hawiaaaan Flowerdy shirts>)

Universal works GREAT!
I have been loading AA#2, BullsEye and AA#7 in my .45 ACP forever.
I was in Bass Pro and picked up some Hogden Universal on a whim. First load, 5.6 gr. under a Remington 230 gr. FMJ w/ Federal 150 primers, first 15 rounds through my Para Ordnance P14-45 LDA @ 15...

IMHO... great idea wish I had thought of it first!

IWB for me..
wife beater t-shirts and cuban, hawaiian or other non-tucked in are my way with a Sam Andrews IWB for my Para 14-45 LDA double stack! Florida is HOT.. today it is pushing 90 already. Been out twice.. I am not skinny and not tall, but Sam's IWB (leather of the finest quality) holds...
There is a hex screw in the front of mine (used Para Ord. 14-45 I just picked up) that will not stay put. If I have no intentions of going into the rod, can I use blue LocTite without causing a problem?

It is worth every cent and his prices are better than all the others I have sought. His price on Elephant and Swiss are very good. I can't say about...
Lead woes
I reload .45 with lubed/lead and HAD the same problem. It did, in fact, mess up my chamber... hours with a dental pic and a bright light and a 5x magnifier..
No More... 1: changed the case flare about .002 larger
2: seat only in one stroke

Before you buy....
See if you can find and handle a CZ40B. It is not as heavy, even loaded with 10 - 14 rounds of hot .40 S&W. It is on the order of the 1911, has a marvelous trigger and can be found new under $400. CZ made them for Colt (was to be the Colt Z for New York's Finest until Sig...
Never touch the stuff..
I cannot use Pyrodex in a flintlock. The ignition point is too high for the ignition format. I COULD put some prime in the barrel first, then Pyrodex, but NAW..
From an ignition standpoint, and accuracy... when you understand your rifle's proclivity and preference for...
FFFFg?
Heck... I shoot Swiss FFFg in my custom flinter (made by Narragansett Armes (now defunct I think)) Tennessee. Shenandoah style with brass furniture and a Medium-SLOW lock built by Erwin Fagle of Ohio).
I prime with it from the same horn. I have a decent touch hole that I pick...
WOW! Glad to meet you all...
I had a great teacher for my flinter days.. 40 years ago my granny handed me one and that started it.. I had a flinch problem. She fixed it.. less than 1 grain of prime in the pan and ignition that rivals a centerfire for speed...
You will find that you can...
My used Para 14-45 has a 2 stage full lenght guide rod and a coil spring of undefined value. Tough to rack the slide! I disassembled the guide rod, clipped the coil inside it til I could operate it OK... STILL.. I never had a FLGR before. Did this Model come with a standard 1911 style GR...
