Safety is a learned response just like many other daily activities, don't think it comes naturally. Practice safety constantly.
For cleaning I like a plastic rod with internal threaded end for brushes and a patch loop. Take it easy on cleaning, don't get too rough.

Read the manual then read it again before touching the gun. Understand how it and its controls work before anything else.

I would suggest a 9mm for your stated purposes. Any brand name firearm that fits you and feels good to you and shoot that model before purchasing if possible.
I have never had to totally strip a handgun, just field strip to clean when dirty. I usually clean every 200 to 300 rounds but I shoot reloads which are very clean.
I have reloaded over 5,000 rounds for a GEN III Glock 23 and 27 with no problems. It is a CYA type deal. I used the fired brass from the Glocks I reloaded for and have had no problems what so ever.:D
I got enough of going to different places in the ARMY. I do sometimes go into Kentucky but since I live in Tennessee and about 3 miles from the state line it ain't no big deal.:D
The basic zero for these rifles is 250 to 300 meters not 100 hundred yards and that is why they shoot high at 100 yards. Changing the front site will also change the POI at other ranges. The rear bottom of the rear site can be reduced so when it sits on the site base it will shoot to 100 yards...
Just changed from a Glock23/27 setup to a Springfield XDm. Full size 40 S&W that has a fully supported chamber and match barrel and a very good striker fired trigger.
