Hey Tuner, xray of 1911 firing

"why don't we SEE it happening with designs that are meant as blowbacks" They use lower pressure cartridges? --Bill

Hey Tuner, xray of 1911 firing

"...it would still operate as a straight blowback..." If I may jump in, I don't think that there is any question about whether it could function as a straight blow-back action: it probably could, at least for a little while. The point of locking the barrel & slide together is to reduce the...

Hey Tuner, xray of 1911 firing

Peterotte, "If you can give me the weight of the slide, the weight of the barrel...then I will do the math and show you how it works" I weighed the slide & barrel from my PC1911 using a trigger pull gauge and got 14oz for the slide and 3.3oz for the barrel. These may not be exact and they...

Tuner, Nice, concise exposition. Had I not already agreed with you, I would now. --Bill

Hey Tuner, xray of 1911 firing

"that pressure is trying to blow the front and rear tubes apart" Well, the frame and outer tube would certainly be pushed backwards, but since the inner tube, the "barrel", is the same diameter as the shot column and has no rifling, there will be little or no friction between the shot column...

Hey Tuner, xray of 1911 firing

"This thread seems to be merely an exercise in semantics and non-scientific physics" You're right about the semantics. The language of physics is mathematics and any description of a process in English--or any other natural language--is going to be an imprecise translation and an exercise in...

Hey Tuner, xray of 1911 firing

"..so the bullet will be about .250 inch into the rifling." Yes, of course. I thought it might move slightly, but I couldn't put my finger on the reason. Makes perfect sense. --Bill

Hey Tuner, xray of 1911 firing

"where would the bullet be when it was finished cycling...and why?" Ok, I'll bite. I'd say the slide will move and eject the casing and the bullet will remain in the chamber. The fact that the bullet is too heavy to move has nothing to do with the force exerted on the slide. So say I...

Frustrated with Case Sizing 45 ACP

I had the same problem with Speer 200gr. lead SWC's. I bought a Lee Carbide Factory Crimp die, and since I've been using it I haven't had a single failure to gauge. --Bill

Anyone tried Cabela's Ceramic Porcelain Polishing Media?

I use ceramic media, although I didn't buy it from Cabelas so I don't know if it's exactly the same stuff. What I use works very well and allows you to decap the cases first so the primer pocket gets cleaned. It is used wet so you need a tumbler that can be used with liquid. I find it easier...

    interesting nola tidbit

The "time to crime" statistic is computed using only guns that are used in a crime and subsequently recovered (and traced) by police. Guns that are never used in a crime--or that are but that police don't get their hands on--don't figure into it at all.

    Precision Bullets

I've loaded a lot of their .45acp 200gr SWC's and really like them. They're very uniform, well made, and accurate. Use lead bullet loading data with them. The only caveat when loading them is to put a bit more bell in the case mouth than normal to avoid damaging the coating. --Bill

    "Independence" .357 ammo......????

Hi fjlee, A friend of mine who shoots .357 a lot doesn't care for Independence ammo; says it is dirty and accuracy is erratic. On the other hand, I've found it to be as good as any other cheap ammo in 45ACP. The cases are brass and reload just fine in either caliber. --Bill

    Anyone use a King's 1911 ambi-safety?

Never mind. I just got the answer. Thanks anyway. --Bill

    Anyone use a King's 1911 ambi-safety?

Can anyone tell me how wide the paddles on King's standard ambidextrous thumb safety are? I called King's about it and all the guy would say is that they are wider than normal but not super wide. He wouldn't or couldn't tell me the actual width. Thanks, Bill

    1911 sear spring replacement?

The section titled "Sear Spring Prep" in this article has a good description of how to tune the sear spring: http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/GunTech/NewsletterArchive.aspx?p=0&t=1&i=349 If you want to replace it, I have had excellent results with Colt's sear spring.
