Seating primers with CCI brass- PITA

Does anyone else notice that CCI brass seems to be the most difficult brass to start seating? It's not the the pockets are tight- but the opening has NO chamfer and doesn't allow for the tiniest bit of misalignment. I'm sure it's not my press being out of index because I have ZERO problems...

How can you assure you have enough neck tension?

I've been reloading for a little bit now and have run into many common reloading issues but recently I noticed something just by chance. I pick up my brass at the range but sometimes when I'm shooting with others the brass gets mixed up. Anyway- tonight I was loading a couple hundred .45ACP...

    .45 ACP with 3.7gr Clays vs. 5.2g 231

I just finished loading some 230gr Berrys with 3.7gr and 3.8gr of Clays and compared it to my regular load which is 5.2gr of 231. I must say I was quite surprised how similar they are. I used 1.260" COL, WLP and brand new Starline brass. Some folks have said that Clays is clean and 231 is...

    Starline .45ACP brass weight... light?

I just picked up some brandy new Starline .45ACP brass. I've heard nothing but good things about this brass. However when I picked up some pieces it actually seemed a little light... so I took some measurements and here's what I found: Federal - 82gr-84gr Winchester- 82-84gr CCI- 87-88gr...

Too light of a load for .40 S&W?

I shoot IPDA SSP. The power factor (speed in ft/sec * grain of bullet) needs to be over 125,000. However with a 180gr Berrys bullet I'm way over the req's power factor with just 6.2gr of Power Pistol, 1.125 COL, WSP. This combination gives me about 925 ft/sec... or a power factor of about...

    Reloading .223 or 5.56/XM193?

I've been reading up in reloading for my Bushy (which can use .223 or 5.56 ammo). I've only seen dies for the .223 though. Can I use the 5.56 cases with these dies? Are 5.56 cases (military?) good for reloading? I have some Federal American Eagle .223 and Federal XM193 cases I've been...

Berry plated vs FMJ- chrono speeds?

I've chrono'd some of my .40 S&W loads. I'm getting an average of 920 ft/sec with my Speer 180 gr FMJ, 6.2gr Power Pistol, 1.125" COL, CCI primers. These are good loads but not near the max for Power Pistol. However- I'm starting a batch of Berrys 180gr plated bullets. These are about the...

Sizer dies- Hornady vs RCBS- Inside Diameter, etc.

In one of my other threads I have mentioned that I'd measured the ID of my Hornady .45ACP sizer/decapper die and compared it to my RCBS die. It was clear that the RCBS Inside Diameter (ID) was smaller- hence size the cases "tighter". The ID of the RCBS was several thousandths smaller (~.006")...

First bullet the slowest-why?... chrono'd results

I tested 30 rounds of .45ACP, S&W DK 1911, 5.2gr W231, 230 Berrys bullet, WLP primer, 1.260" COL. I loaded 8 rounds in the mag, shot the bullets, reloaded (no rushing either) and repreated. I've noticed the firsts round was noticably slower than the rest... about 40 ft/s slower than the...

I am not happy with my Harnady LNL right now!

I am not happy with my Hornady LNL right now! Well I'm very annoyed right now. When I first got the LNL I couldn't get the powder thru expanders to work correctly. So I deprimed/resized on my Rock Chucker for a while. Well today I decided to give it a go with .45ACP. I adjusted the powder...

Federal NT in .40 S&W- crimped?

I got a ton of nice .40S&W Federal cases that are tumbling now but I just noticed they have the NT stamp. I haven't seen the .40 S&W in a "NT" version. Are these crimped? Thanks!

Use undersize die with .40S&W- always?

I have the Lee undersize die and it certainly gets bulged Glock brass to resize correctly- ie fits gauge. The question I ask is- do you only use the die on brass that doesn't fit the gauge after using a normal die or do you just use it on ALL .40 S&W brass you find/have?

    Home gunsmithing experiences

Just curious to see if anyone had tried some stuff on their own and what their experiences are. I have a M&P40 and would like to try some things(trigger job)- I'd have all parts as spares (sear assembly, etc) and this would only be for range use- not SD. How did you get started and what did...

    "Reclassified" commercial ammo?

When I picked up a new gun the other day the dealer gave me a box of free ammo- not only was it not .40 S&W (the gun was .40 S&W) but it had a label on it that said "reclassified". This was .357 Sig, Speer Lawman ammo. The case headstamps all say Speer .357 sig and appear normal. Anyone know...

    Plated vs. FMJ

I've been reloading for a few months now and have used both Winchester FMJ and Berrys (for comparision they both have 124gr 9mm). I like using the Berrys indoors for the idea of reducing lead exposure. However is there any advantage of using the FMJ (with exposed lead bottom) over a plated...

Loading primers on Hornady LNL AP

I should have been more careful on the title of the post.. I should have said "Seating primers". I did a batch of 200 .45 ACP today. Mostly CCI and Win brass with Winchester Large pistol primers. I seemed to have a tough time seating the primers to the appropriate depth. I ended up taking...

Primer storage laws in your state?

MA requires a permit to store over 1000 primers. A permit will allow you to store 5000 (or 10000 depending on who you talk to). What are your state's limits if any? Easy on the MA bashing... I can't leave for a while.

Using brass rod for low primer?

I have a Hornady LNL AP and wanted to get some kind of inexpensive low primer indicator. I've heard some have used a wooden dowel but I found a 1/8" brass rod that looks like it would work perfect. Any issues with using this?

Pistol Primer Pocket Uniformer- vs Rifle?

Just picked up 2 Lyman Uniformers- #7810215 Large, #7810218 Small. It says that there is a difference in pocket depth between pistol and rifle... but I don't know which these are! The small seems to fit in the small pistol cases I have and rest on the shoulder. Is there really much difference...
