What rifles can be built entirely from scratch?

IIRC you can actually buy some high-end SXS shotgun actions in the white, along with barrel sets. You better be prepared to drop several K though, plus the barrels need to be fitted to the action.

Revolver checkout: how to tell if a particular specimen is any good

I think the first post really needs to have a check for "carrying up" added; as it is currently written this important test isn't obvious to a neophyte. To check for "carry up" one needs to cock the hammer as slowly as reasonably possible and listen to the cylinder stop falling into the notch...

    Model 28 S and W

Sweet gun, but don't be fooled into thinking they are invincible. I am probably going to send the example I bought this summer to the smith because it is not "carrying up." My own inexperience with wheelguns is to blame here, though the "Revolver Checkout" sticky doesn't even mention "carrying...

    Ruger Mk3 Rear Sight Blade

Ruger only has the V-Notch blade for sale on their website, and Rimfire Sports only has full sight sets, not just the individual blade component.

    Ruger Mk3 Rear Sight Blade

I've got a Ruger Mk3 Deluxe .22 pistol, which is awesome except for the stupid rear sight blade. The Deluxe has the Hunter style sights (fiber optic front and adjustable rear) with a V-Notch blade, which is driving me nuts. I'd like to pick up a conventional square notch blade, but can't seem to...

    Endshake Repair Question

How hard is it to even the end of the yoke? I assume it is a job best left to a gunsmith.

    Endshake Repair Question

Is it possible to give a very general round count for such a fix to last? 10,000 rounds of .38s?

Is this amount of cylinder movement normal?

Also, I can wiggle the firing pin up and down on the hammer over an approximately 3-5* (about .1in at the tip). Is this bad?

    Endshake Repair Question

I am thinking about installing a bushing on a revolver with .005 endshake. However, the cylinder gap on this gun varies from .006-.007. If I do not square up the yoke but still install the bushing, what result would occur?

Is this amount of cylinder movement normal?

Where exactly is the groove seen? Is it on the flat metal on the bottom of the window in the frame? If this is the case, and the squaring operation isn't performed but an endshake bushing is fitted, what negative effects would there be on the gun?

Is this amount of cylinder movement normal?

It also seems that the amount of cylinder gap with the cylinder held fully back varies from .006 - .007. I have heard that the crane must be squared before the bushings are fitted, is this the reason why? If I was to fit a .004 bushing with this variance, what effect would this have on the gun?

Is this amount of cylinder movement normal?

Well, I guess this one is going to the dealer's. Funny how it had an endshake of .002 when I was looking at it, but after I cleaned it up the shake increased to .005.

Is this amount of cylinder movement normal?

Is a revolver that has a cylinder gap of .007in with the cylinder held back, and a gap of ~.002in with the cylinder pushed fully forward within normal specs for Smith and Wesson?

    S&W 28 Shooter

Well, I've got it. Sorry for the crap pictures: Can't wait to go and shoot it tomorrow! The trigger is very nice, I figured out how to stage the double action within ten pulls dryfiring (and my only other DA experience was a couple of shots from a Hi-Standard .22), and the single action is...

    S&W 28 Shooter

The cylinder gap measures .004, with .001-.0015 endshake. Looks like in three days I become a member of club S&W. Pics then.

What is your worst gun accident?

It usually happens when one is working on the gun. I nailed my finger when I was letting the bolt forward slowly on mine (was trying to help a THR member whose gun wouldn't feed IIRC). It stopped when the shell carrier was raised. Unfortunately as i was pushing it forwards to free it it snapped...
