    The new Winchester 94?

I work at a gun shop that is a stocking Browning dealer, and we always have a few new 94s in stock. They are very well made to my eye, but we only sell one or two a year because of the price. I haven't heard how well they shoot, but the old ones were never meant to be a target rifle, but more as...

Ruger Grips = yuck for me

Hogue Monogrip. It's made of soft rubber and fills in the space behind the square trigger guard on the Super Blackhawk, and extends below the bottom of the frame to make room for the pinky to grip. I have big hands, too, and while a pinky below the frame works fine and is comfortable to shoot...

    Flintlock barrel question ...

What Articap said about patent breeches, with the breech plug having a smaller diameter than the bore. I generally just remove the barrel from the stock and set the breech end in a pot of water and flush it out with a cleaning jag that fits the bore tight with a cleaning patch by pumping the...

    45 Kentucky long rifle.

Just throwing out some opinions here, never having hunted hogs. If you can get close enough, a round ball hits with pretty good authority. The problem is a roundball bleeds off velocity pretty fast (and energy), though I killed a mule deer at around 100yds. with a .433 roundball and 60 grains of...

New CCI musket caps "For Reenactment Use" -??

I've used them with my .54 with maxiballs and heavy powerbelts no problem, though mine did not say for "Reenactment Use" on the tin.

    Neck Tension on 30-06

What RCmodel said. But first, try loading up some without a crimp, then jack a loaded round into the chamber after measuring OAL. Then remove the loaded round and measure again. If the bullet has moved forward from the inertia of the shell being slammed into the chamber, then spin the expander...

How many really enjoy your snubnose

I just bought my first snubnose yesterday, although I bought my first handgun over 35 years ago. This one is a Taurus 905, a 9mm based on the Taurus model 85 snubnose. All I can say is, what a gas! Even with my big hands, it's very comfortable to shoot both single and double action, and more...

    Is .45-70 That Powerful?

Some More Info If one looks at a Hornady reloading manual, it shows different .45-70 load levels for: 1. Trapdoor Springfield 2. Marlin 1895 3. Ruger #1 The Ruger #1 can only be loaded with a Hornady 500 gr. bullet to 1800 fps (3,000 ft. lbs.), while in a .458 Win. it goes up to 2150...

    Help with a trapdoor

Don't use Hornady Lever Evolution .45-70 ammo. It's loaded for pressures suitable to modern rifles, like Marlins and Ruger #1s. The first trapdoors were .58 caliber (they reused the Springfield musket barrels the rifles were built from to save money), then they went to .50 caliber (.50-70)...

Mounting a scope on a Ruger No. 1

I put a Simmons 4x shotgun scope on my #1 in .45-70 for now. It offers about 4" of eye relief, which is almost enough for me. If I had left the factory stock on, it would probably work fine, but I restocked it with a longer buttstock, as I am tall and wanted a longer length of pull. Ruger does...

50 cal bp muz loader sabot used in trapdoor

Load them like you would a muzzleloader. The bullet needs to be seated down tight to the powder charge, preferrably slightly compressing the powder. Any air gaps can lead to a big kaboom. I'm assuming your sabot round is lighter than the original bullet, so a case loaded to capacity with enough...

    Bolt vs. Semi-auto hunting rifle?

The Browning BAR Short Trac semi-auto is available in .243 caliber, among others, and weighs 6 lbs. 10 oz.. The left handed version is only $30.00 more than the right hander. An added benefit is the gas operating system will absorb a portion of the recoil that a bolt action won't, letting you...

Is this an incredibly stupid idea?

A .457 roundball should be a tight fit in a sized .45/70 case, no need to crimp, especially since it's a single shot. With a full load of BP, at the velocity it's going to be moving, and the small bearing surface of a roundball, it might strip out of the fast twist rifling of a Sharps. Remember...

    What could be going on?

Recoil Pads and Parallax Look at Brownells.com or Midwayusa.com, or even Cabelas. Most recoil pad manufacturers make pre-shaped screw on pads for specific factory guns. Flinch from recoil can make for terrible groups. If you want to see how bad your flinch is, or if you have one, let someone...

Loading a Walker with 2Fg instead of 3Fg?

No safety issue going from 3f to 2f (faster to slower powder), but as snooperman said, yes, there is more pressure with 3f. The people I mentioned using 3f in larger bores (.50 and larger) typically reduce maximum loads by 15-20 percent from the 2f load. I would contact the manufacturer of your...

Loading a Walker with 2Fg instead of 3Fg?

Well, FWIW, I sometimes hunt with a .44 caplock rifle shooting .431 roundballs over 60 grains of 3f blackpowder. I've used the same load, except for using a .454 roundball, as a maximum load in my Walker. I've yet to chronograph the Walker, since I've only had a chance to shoot it once since I...

    Tips and advice needed

Shoot off a bench using a rest where you can reposition the pistol to same place after each shot. It's real easy for a pistol to get out of position - where one shot was the right height over the chronograph screens, the next one is right through the chronograph screens.
