    Springfield Trapdoor, Berdan Conversion

The museum were I volunteer has a nice collection of Trapdoor Springfields. A recent donation stymied me for days until I happened to run across a reference to a .58 Berdan rimfire cartridge. That led to a single expired listing on Guns International for a Berdan Conversion of an 1864...

    $50,000 Winchester

I'm the firearms historian for a state museum. Man asked to see me with firearms questions. Said his father was in failing health and he wanted to know the best way of selling dad's collection, some guns worth $50,000. People assume that any old gun is worth a lot of money, so I was skeptical...

Thank you, John Browning, for the 1911.

I shot a 1911 or 2011 for years in USPSA competition. Carried one concealed for many more years. Decided at some point to look into lighter handguns, easier to carry and conceal. Transitioned to a Glock 19. Took some time to learn the trigger but became reasonably competent with it. Looking...

    60" hard rifle case?

I need a couple for shipping some flintlocks. Would prefer a reasonable cost. Usual sources seem limited to "standard" lengths and the occasional item in extra length breaks the bank. Anyone know of a source? Thanks.

    Mystery Remington Keene

The museum where I volunteer as a firearms historian has a unique Remington Keene carbine that was used by guards on the Deadwood Stage, more properly, the Cheyenne and Black Hills Stage and Express Line The line was in operation from 1876 to 1887. I am unable to make an accurate identification...

    Shockwave Issues

LGS had 20 gauge Shockwaves for $199. I've shot about 25 rounds and starting having extraction and feeding issues. Magazine tube cap was loose. Now functions fine unless I try to load a fifth shell. Won't go in and the follower binds in the tube resulting in no tension on the shell column...

    Kimber mainspring housing

I am trying to replace the plastic housing on a Kimber Lightweight Government. The Evolution Gun Works SS unit I purchased lacks about 1/16 inch of seating so I cannot replace the housing retaining pin. I bought the housing from a private party, can't return or swap out. What am I doing wrong?

    Frozen 1911 grip screw

Currently soaking in Kroil penetrating oil. Tried heat from a hair dryer, tapping the head. No joy. What to try next? More heat? I'm concerned about damaging the original grip, but the screw must come out.

1894 Winchester with 3 digit serial number

A local museum asked for help evaluating a donated collection of 32 Model 1894 and Model 94 rifles and carbines. The alleged "gem" of the collection is a .38-55 with a three digit serial number. However, the finger lever link, the breech bolt, and carrier are obvious replacements. The rest of...

Leupold power adjustment ring hard to turn.

Basic Leupold 3x9 variable on my wife's CZ American .17 HMR. Adjustment ring has become almost impossible to turn. Any ideas short of sending it back to Leupold? Anyone have experience with their Customer Service? I have a Leupold on my .17 and it works just fine. Thanks for any ideas or...

    .220-250 by Chas. Tebor?

I'm looking at a 1956 (SN 3738XX) Winchester Model 70 Standard Grade that has been rebarreled. The left side of the barrel just ahead of the receiver is stamped in two lines: Chas. Tebor / .220-250...

    Making a rifle from scratch

I used the search function to see if anyone has posted a link to this video recently, and nothing showed up, which could be because I didn't do it correctly. Anyway, this vid shows a present day (more or less, it's an old video) gunsmith at Williamsburg making a flintlock rifle in the...

    Uberti vs. Colt Sig Series

Bit of a rant and brief review. I recently acquired a Colt Signature Series 1849 Pocket Model and a Uberti Pocket Model of Navy Caliber. The Colt came from Gun Broker and the Uberti from Midway. I've wanted a 1849 for a long time, debated Uberti vs. Colt. Decided to spend double the money...

    1911 Serial Number help please.

I am researching an interesting 1911. It is a Springfield Armory 1911 frame marked with the eagle over S 8 behind the trigger. There are initials small H large D on the muzzle side of the disconnector, small G on hammer side. UNITED STATES PROPERTY on left side of frame. Hammer, grip safety...

.17 HMR sight in issues, need advice

My truck gun for ground squirrels is a New England Firearms single shot with a Leupold 3.5x10. Checked it out yesterday after missing some easy shots. Over a solid rest, it's right on at 25 yards, but about an inch low at 12 yards with Hornaday 17 grain bullets. I've looked at trajectory...

    Silicone Valve Maintenance Cartridges?

I recently purchased my first CO2 airgun, a Gletcher replica of a Mauser 1896 Broomhandle. I also acquired 5 silicone C02 cartridges. The directions are incomplete. I assume I use one of these after 10 regular cartridges and it will function as a regular cartridge while lubricating the...

    Plexiglas grips?

We have a non-firing S&W revolver with a clear plexiglas side plate that we use to demonstrate function in our NRA Basic Pistol Class. Would it be possible to fabricate simple grips from 1/4" or 3/8" plexiglas? I've never worked with this stuff. Can it be cut/shaped with hand tools like a...

    Supreme Court re: Weapons Ban

The Supreme Court may consider an appeal to an Illinois lower court decision to uphold a suburban ban on "assault" weapons and standard capacity magazines. http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/justices-mull-appeal-of-chicago-suburbs-assault-weapons-ban/ar-AAfyShS?li=AAa0dzB The article...

    Problem with Old S&W

A friend gave me the classic sock drawer gun he found after a relative passed. It's a nickel S&W .32 break top with what may be factory pearl grips. Finish is 95% with a few handling marks. Serial No. on butt and cylinder is 54035. Last patent date on the barrel rib is Jan 3 82. Works fine...

White "roll mark" on Colt/Umarex .22

I bought one of the Colt/Walther/Umarex 1911 .22 Government Models. Needed a trigger job, but otherwise a decent toy for the money. I don't like the white lettering on both sides of the slide. Is there a safe way to remove it, or cover it, without damaging the finish on the rest of the...
