    Another flashlight thread

For those interested, 18650 cells are the way to go for rechargeable flashlights. The up-front cost is maybe 2x as much up front but will amortize quickly if your lights go through batteries quickly. A lot of what makes a weapon light a weapon light these days is build construction. Two main...

Are those old 870 Riot police trade in's any good?

Oh nuts. I wish I'd seen this 2 weeks ago; it'd have saved me several hundred dollars. :-/ This was pretty much exactly what I was looking for.

    Where's NES?

What's the AG? What is 'everything else' which has been shut down by this AG? :-/

AR-15 From the ground up... any comments?

As someone who was looking at doing the same thing a couple years ago for my first rifle... let me just say: don't. It really doesn't save you all that much once you've purchased the necessary assembly tools, and then you don't have a warranty or any such thing. What you might have is a rifle...

Surprising news (to me ) about Gander Mountain.

I'm all for supporting the local shops, up until they start gouging people. Some are good, some are bad. I've had my fill of a handful of shops when I've seen them offer "best offer, $180" for a new, never fired custom 1911, and similar other atrocities to people that don't know any better.

Spray painting a gun, need help with high heat paint

Ya know, I've never painted guns before, and I've been skeptical of those who have. But let me tell you... About 5 years ago, my Father-in-law painted his lawn furniture - then a hideous green color - with some (likely store brand) "outdoor/patio", Rustoleum type flat black paint. He's no...

Really strange gun... Anybody know anything?

Quick, check the back lot! Someone's stealing sci-fi movie props again! :-o That is one hideous pistol. Desert Eagle meets Mauser Broomhandle meets Gundam Wing meets... god, I don't know. Something hideous.

    Ak47 $440

Hey, cool. Glad to hear they're going down, finally. I'd really have loved to get a Yugoslavian about two years ago for $500 when they were available (buddy of mine did, great looking rifle for an AK). When they drop to $350 I'll think about one or two.

    20 gauge or 12 gauge?

To those who would recommend a 20 ga with bird shot for home defense... are you out of your mind? BIRD. SHOT. It might give them a bad skin rash. (That's a slight exaggeration, but only about as much as the effectiveness of such a round.) A round like that might piss off a badger and won't hurt...

Red neck -- any secret cures?

Aloe vera - be CERTAIN what you use does not have alcohol in it, because alcohol will dry out your skin. Most lotions and commercially available aloe has alcohol in it - presumably to dry out the skin while giving temporary relief, so you've got to apply more an hour later. I've also used...

NFA Trust: "ATF takes longer and diggs deeper into your background to discover why"?

FBI has been taking a lot longer to run fingerprints in the last year for a number of reasons (increase in government/clearanced people is, I suspect, one of them). It took well over 3 months for my process to get completed after I'd finished the paperwork for a very basic security check.

<Morbo>Pistols do not work that way!</Morbo>

I'd have to say my biggest peeves are movie sounds. I can look past a lot of the movie or TV stupid, even bad movie sounds or improper firearm actions. But sometimes it's astounding how bad the sounds are: you'd think that if they'd used just ONE blank, they'd know how it's supposed to sound...

My foray into custom exotic wood 1911 grips

I LOVE the wood you got for your grips. What tools I've only done one set of grips (for a Star BM), and I'm happy (yet somewhat embarrassed) to say that I did these by hand: Just some plain white oak (from an old doorframe someone was throwing out) with a light stain and polyurethane finish...

Illuminated reticle scopes. Washed out in the dark?

That is really quite unfortunate. Is the scope manufacturer going to help you/replace the scope for you? That might be one option. If not, If we're talking about value over a couple hundred dollars, I believe it would be grounds to get law enforcement involved (particularly due to the...

    CR123A Lithium

I like BatteryStation.com CR123s. They're priced well at $1.25, Made in the USA, and are the most consistent ones out there (which is important when you're using 2x in series due to them being lithium ion). I like 3.7v 18650 rechargeable cells better than a 2x cr123 setup - but the light has to...

    Tactical flash light

As highorder said, CPF is the end-all, be-all on flashlight geekery - though it's not all that well organized or easy to find statistical type information there. The Fenix lights are one of two brands a friend of mine recommends (the other being Surefire). $130 looks like a good price to me...

    Gun Bigotry

Interesting. I do believe that "evil black assault rifles" was either coined by the left to demonize such things, or it was made tongue-in-cheek by gun owners in reaction to such demonization (possibly using their own terms, I don't know). If anything, given the characteristic nature of the...

If people ask me why I'm always armed, even outdoors,

I don't know about that. I suppose it depends on how old you are: my great-grandfather likely had to deal with bootleggers (he was a cop during/prior to WWII), and I know my great-uncle did (he was a Park Ranger back when they regularly had to deal with violent poachers and bootleggers - 20s and...

    Gun buy back story question.

Wonder if you'd be able to buy some of these guns (ie the non-stolen, non-crime-associated ones) at the annual police auction? I know you could, and still can in some places, do so. It'd sure be nice to pick up a cheap gun that way. I know a guy who got a nice Norinco 1911 for $50 at one auction...
