Powder suggestions for 45 Long Colt

I use 5.0 g of trail boss under a 250 grain lead bullet for cowboy action shooting. Very nice load. It meters fine out of the Dillon.....not so well out of the RCBS powder measure.

Mounting Gun Safe To Wooden Floor Help?

Good suggestions with lagging it to the studs....Have you considered making a false wall to actually hide the safe from view? I helped a friend do this with his safe. If you go that route you don't show anyone where it is or it won't be a secret any longer.

Drifting out the loading lever dovetail lug on 1851 Pietta

I have an 1851 Pietta that I converted to .38 long colt. It came out very nice. I want to remove the loading lever lug at the front of the barrel. I don't know if there is a directionality issue with the direction of drift out....left to right, or right to left...it seems like it should matter...

Is there a die set to reload 12ga. for the Dillon 550b? Can't find it on Dillon site.

I was wondering if there are any dies for the 550b that could be used for shotshell reloading. It looks like I would need to buy the Dillon press for that and they are around 900.00. I have the Lee load all but my crimps do not stay closed. Anyone able to use their 550 for this?

Filling in the notch on the hammer for better performance

I don't know if I read it in a thread here or on an Internet article but the article promoted filling in the notch on the hammer (1851 Colt, 1858 Remington) to enhance performance. I experimented with that strategy on one of my 1851 Piettas. The results were just terrible. Three of of six caps...

Can anyone tell me what make and model this handgun is? PICS

What is this? That serial number beginning with F is not found on any of the hi-power serial number references I can find. They used a T, but no F. I found a link to the hi-power manual that you may find useful. http://media.browning.com/pdf/om/hipowermanual.pdf

Favorite "gun" scene in a movie?

Pale Rider Clint's Remington 1858 when he is walking down the street in the final showdown and he rolls out the spent cylinder and rolls in a fresh one. Classic!

    I'm Having A Problem

Re: Can't bring myself to shoot them I am assuming that you mean they look so nice that you don't want to "spoil" it by shooting them and not because you are concerned about quality control. If that is the case then I would have to say that "yes". Sometimes when I load for calibers that I don't...

    Reloading presses... I got questions.

Get a quality press that will match your current and projected needs I only know RCBS and Dillon. I used the RCBS single stage for years and it was fine until I got into competition shooting. I was spending so much time reloading with the single single stage that it was cutting into other...

gun security:wood cabinet vs steel safe

Banks have a safe...we have a home storage device Our home "safe" is not really a safe. My neighbor had a 2000.00 Cannon Safe and the burglars cut through the steel with a cut off saw like it was butter. They are fine for keeping children and nosy guests out of your personal stuff but not...

    .36 Colt loads

18 grains for .36 The spout I use is 18 grains for my 1851 colts and my 1860 colts. I use them for cowboy action and it is a light, accurate load. I have heard of others using cream of wheat as a filler. I am intrigued by your comment of using the filler to allow the ball to seat closer to the...

    Trail boss+jacketed bullet= safe

Trail Boss I like to "save" my Trail Boss for low velocity Cowboy Loads. There are so many better powders out there to service the hunting loads of pistol and rifle calibers. I have tried Trail Boss at 14gr for my Sharps 45-70 and it made for a pretty wimpy load. I felt that I was wasting the...

    How to slug a barrel

Slugging Great info from all. There are also many you-tube videos that will give you a visual of how this is done. I read a post on this thread that advised using a short piece of dowel followed by another longer piece. This is accurate and good advice. If you try to ram it through with a...

    Lead Poisoning --Valuable Health Information

Elevated Lead Levels Chelation therapy is normally reserved for very high levels of lead in your blood. Mild level can be treated with succimer tablets by mouth. I am an active Cowboy Action Shooter and also cast and reload lots of lead. Two of our members had high lead levels in their blood...

Oil finish or high gloss lacquer?

Re: Tpm's Gunstock Finish Thanks MadCrateBuilder! I had found that recipe on the Internet years ago and they did not give credit to that website. I just figured it was an old homemade hand me down recipe. It makes a beautiful finish on furniture and gun stocks. It won't protect against dings or...

Does reloading change your "stash" levels?

Good thoughts Target.... I think I would rather have a larger stash of components on hand more than a couple hundred of each caliber I own. I have also been increasing my stash of black powder components such as molds, lead, percussion caps and flint for the flintlocks. I also have purchased...

Does reloading change your "stash" levels?

Decreased Stash levels What decreases my stash levels most is when my adult sons take their friends to the range and they burn up my bullets....lol. They pay for the components but it still takes up my time to replenish the stock. Gotta love your kids.

Oil finish or high gloss lacquer?

Homemade Wood Finish I use a mixture of 1/3 BLO, 1/3 beeswax, and 1/3 gum turpentine melted in a double boiler over an electric burner. Pour it into a glass or metal wide mouth container and let it cool to a semi-hard paste. It makes for a beautiful old world finish.

    Reloading for an XD .40

Reloading for your XD Standard 1911 barrels and many others have "unsupported" chambers. This just refers to the mouth of the chamber that extends from the feed ramp leaving a short length of case head brass exposed instead of giving it 100% support as an integral ramp barrel will do. The XD's...
