guys i am raising the funds for a 1858 remington 44c but need your thoughts on 8in barrel versus 5 1/2in barrel which one and why etc?

Congrats on the new piece. I have a couple of Pieta 1858's, steel frame with 8" barrels and one with the shorter barrel. Definitely prefer the longer barrel as it balances better for me. Strictly personal preference, of course. You're going to have a lot of fun with it. Jeff

    How much brass to save

My brass hoarding started from need. Money was tight and every piece of free 38 special and 45 acp brass was a boon. Even at 1980 prices I could reload cast bullets (scrounged wheel weights) cheaper than commercial. Then it became a game: load safe and accurate ammo with the least expense even...

Waters's Pet loads for cast bullets

A follow-up. My copy of Pet Loads arrived and I've been thumbing through it. This wasn't inexpensive but is proving to be worth it. I really enjoy his background on the cartridge and the analysis of his tests. There is a lot of enjoyable reading in all those pages. The book is heavy but I use a...

    Favorite powders for revolvers

    - Bullseye - Unique - 2400 A couple of shortages, and price increases, ago, I wanted to simplify my powder needs. The vast majority of my revolver loads are light to midrange and with cast bullets so Bullseye and Unique can meet my needs from 32 long to 45 Colt. (Although I prefer 3F Goex for...

Waters's Pet loads for cast bullets

After this discussion, my dear wife (she is a prize) told me to stop dithering and get the book. Just placed the order. Thanks again for your thoughts. Jeff

Waters's Pet loads for cast bullets

Thanks for the feedback. Think I'll keep an eye open for a copy at a good price for some enjoyable reading. I do have the latest edition of the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook which has met my needs so far. It helps that I typically load for light to medium power levels and use established powders...

Waters's Pet loads for cast bullets

I just saw that the complete Pet Loads is available from MidwayUSA and Amazon for 60 bucks. Most of my reloading is for revolver cartridges and common rifle calibers. Probably 95 percent of my loads are with cast bullets. The exceptions are 22 Hornet, .222 Remington, and .223. I get most of the...

    Decker/Buchanon hand press opinions

Another thank you to the group about the Buchanan press. It arrived three work days after I ordered it and well packaged. (Surprisingly good for across the country.) To say it exceeded my expectations is an understatement. This tool oozes quality. I lubed up some 30/06 and 45-70 cases and full...

    Decker/Buchanon hand press opinions

Just had a chance to compare the Decker and the Lee hand presses full length resizing 30/06 cases that had been fired from a Garand. I used Lee Pacesetter dies and Imperial sizing wax to lube the cases. I was surprised at the difference. The Decker required about half the effort compared to the...

    Decker/Buchanon hand press opinions

Folks, Thanks for the information, especially for getting Mr. Buchanan in on it. I'm going to lube up the Decker and see how it does on full length resizing. The Lee hand press is fine for lighter tasks like depriming and bullet seating. But I can't do the same things on it I could 30 or even 15...

    Decker/Buchanon hand press opinions

I just picked up a used (obviously) Decker hand press. Apparently it is what became the current Buchanon Precision hand press. I've read that the Buchanon is easier to use than the Lee hand press, especially for full length resizing. Does anyone use the Decker/Buchanon press? How does it...

    .32 h&r magnum absence

Another suggestion to reload. Lee dies, Starline brass, and 98 grain WCs from Missouri Bullets. Found the bulk brass and dies on sale. (After the previous shortage I made sure I had enough primers and powder for all my calibers to last a long time.) I reload at 32 long levels which my Single-Six...

    Lever Action .22

I've read criticisms of the Henry rimfire rifles, not just on the Forum, about their receivers, sometimes their innards. That hasn't been my experience. I have their base models in 22lr and 22 mag. After putting thousands of rounds through them without a single FTF or FTE and no loss of...

    Ruger Single-Ten (Estate Sale)

Massive congrats on a great revolver and even better deal!! I lucked into a similar deal a couple of years ago. (Wish it happened more often.) The best aspect was discovering that, for some reason, I shoot the Single-Ten better than a Single-Six. It's become my favorite 22lr single action. Jeff

    An important safety practice

Good advice. Since I don't hunt anymore (the years catch up with a guy) I never need to leave a gun loaded so this isn't a problem. My range rod is marked and I always run a few wet patches down the bore before leaving the range. Full cleaning gets done at home. BUT When folks new to muzzle...

my new to me smith and wesson 17-2

Congrats on the new to you acquisition. Much as I like my Ruger single actions and black powder revolvers, the K-38 and K-17 are superb shooters. They are included in my will. They aren't going anywhere until I do. :D Jeff

Just couldn’t pass up another Blackhawk

Nice find. I haven't seen a 4 5/8 Blackhawk in 45 Colt for a long time. The thread made me wonder how many Ruger single-actions I've picked up over the last 40 years. The number is both silly and embarrassing. But I do like single-actions that are accurate, well made and can be handed down to...

    Good old reloading gear

Offfhand, Thanks for posting those photos. Except for the placement of the "Ideal" logo (mine is closer to the hinge) it is identical for the tool and box. Jeff

    America and the .32 Revolver

Thanks for the heads up about the article. I'll have to check it out. The last few years the 32 long out of a Ruger Single-Six has become one of my favorite target rounds. Jeff

    Good old reloading gear

I just received a couple of reloading items: a Redding #1 powder and bullet scale and a Lyman Ideal 310 tool in 22 Hornet. Pretty sure they both are older than me (gasp!) which doesn't happen often these days. The scale has a heavy black metal base, the balance beam is brass and it doesn't have...
