mossberg 500 vs benelli nova/superova vs remington 870 express

With Remington having QC problems of late, I'd go for the Mossberg 500. I have a Nova but the price of aftermarket barrels and other parts is rather ridiculous, IMO. If you think 870, think older used 870s, instead of the newer ones that are giving chambering problems.

    High Standard Deluxe Choke

Those old Lyman chokes are very handy and versatile. Tighten it as far as you can. Back up until it clicks one time. This is extra full, every click opens the choke a bit more. Don't turn it back more than one complete turn as the last click prior to the beginning spot on the out turn is IC...

    Help Me Decide

If Stoeger would fix the 12 lb trigger pulls on theri doubles, they'd be my pick. I sold mine a few weeks ago and bought another 311. I could have fooled with the triggers or had a gunsmith do it, but I sold it rather than fix it. The 311 still sells used for more than the Stoeger NIB.

Is a 12-guage shotgun powerful enough to hunt a bear with?

When I was a kid, back in the Great Depression, we hunted black bear all the time with 2 3/4" 00 buckshot. Food on the table was our main problem and slugs were hard to find. Pumpkin balls were available but few trusted them. We hunted with dogs so the bear was usually riled up and fighting mad...

model of spa luigi franchi - brescia - shotgun

Luigi Franchi made the Model AL-48 until 1998 when they sold out to Beretta. I'm thinking that you have a Magnum model of the AL-48. The standard models were 2 3/4". If ever a better semiauto was made, I haven't found it yet. Your 3" model was for waterfowling and turkey hunting. I've never...

Benelli 20 gauges: Montefeltro vs. UltraLight

Beretta discontinued the Franchi AL48 in 12 gauge in 1998 when it purchased the Luigi Franchi Co. It was a competitor to the Benelli inertia action at half the price. Now you can only get the 48 in 20 or 28 gauge new. If you want a 12 gauge, you'll have to buy used. They run around $400 and are...

Hardest kicking gun you've ever shot?

Thinking back over the past seventy years, I've fired a few single barrels that got my attention. I suppose the only one that really hurt was a tenite stocked Stevens 94 made in the 1940s. That plastic stock made it as light as a feather. Same punishment at both ends of the gun. Some years...

    Stoeger Turkey Gun?

I have been very pleased with my M2000, after I put a #10008 Limbsaver recoil pad on it. It now recoils like a 410. Very easy on the shoulder.

To buy or not to buy

Give her $100 and enjoy it. If you are not a clays shooter, it will outlast you. For the average shooter, it will be an OK gun. Great, it ain't. Keep it in the family.

Looking for a good hunting shotgun, must withstand rain/mud

The Nova is pertnear corrosion resistant. I no longer own a 870.

    Why 870 over 1300?

The feed throat on those Winchesters is a pain to change out. You'll never change one on the 870. I sold my post-1964 Winchester shotguns of the 1200-1500 design due to the flimsy parts.
