    Reloading Press Question

I think I would rather have the Dillon 550. It reloads just about all ammo where the Square Deal only loads pistol if I remember. It doesn't take standard reloading dies and it's not that much cheaper than a 550. You can grow with a 550. Just my opinion for what it's worth. I have a 550 and...

Press or handloader for beginner with no workshop?

I started out with a Lyman Nutcacker and got rid of it just as soon as I could. Your best bet is to start out with a single stage and adapt it to fit any kind of table you can come up with. The Black and Decker WorkMate is a good choice. You can also mount it on a board and use clamps to...

Where have you setup your reloading equipment?

I am envious of people who have basements. In Oklahoma, the soil doesn't do well with basements and most leak. I have mine in my garage.

    44 magnum powder.

Unique is such a great powder. You can load lighter loads or medium loads with this stuff. It makes the 44 Mag very manageable. Go with 296 or 2400 for powderhouse loads.

Remington Primers vs Winchester vs CCI vs Federal

CCI primers in the past have had some quality conntrol problems causing problems fitting in Dillon reloading equipment primer tubes. I have heard they have corrected this problem now. At one time, Dillon advised customers not to use CCI and use instead Winchester or Remington primers.

    Where are the primers

Panic buying is driving the price up to about $40.00 per thousand. The sad thing is once they go up don't expect them to go back down. Just buy what you need and no more. I bought mine when supplies were pleniful.

    Purpose of load logs?

If we've tried a particular powder and it didn't do well, you should note that so you don't go down that road again. Thomas Edison called this negative evidence and it's important. This is the important reason to write down every primer, powder, etc, you use. When something looks promising and...

    Primers in Stock

The latest issue of Dillon's Blue Press say they have all sizes of primers in stock with no backorders.

    D-lead hand soap

I use good old liquid dishwashing soap and a hand scrub brush. As a science teacher, I learned in hand washing experiments that it's more effective to use the brush when washing hands. That's why surgeons use a scrub brush before doing operations.

    .44 special in .44 mag...

I shoot both 44 Mag and 44 Special in my S&W 629 but I shoot 44 special because they have less recoil. Anymore, I'm phasing out 44 special and just shooting light 44 Mag loads instead. If I want powerhouse loads, I load them in a 44 mag casing.

Historical question:What company made the first progressive press for home reloaders?

I was reading some time ago that Dillon's machines were based on the Star reloading press. I don't remember where I read it or if it has any truth or not. Anyone have any information about this?

    reloading presses

I agree with Moosehunt. I have two Dillons and started out with a Rockchucker and later bought the now discontinued RCBS Big Max. I still fine a need for my single stage press. I still load 7MM Mag and 3006 on the single stage press. I do like the idea of a Turret but have never loaded on one.

Can you safely use magnum primers in normal loads?

A year or so ago I called CCI primers with that very question. They said it would be just fine. Just reduce your load a couple of grains or so and you'll be fine.

    Reloading Equipment

It's not that hard to learn on a 550. I started on a rock chucker and have had numerous progressives. I currently own a Dillon 550 and 650 press. The 550 is easy but wouldn't recommend the 650 for my first press.

    Press choice

I've had a Rockchucker and presently still have the BigMAX (RCBS) discontinued. It was by far, the heaviest of the presses but didn't sell. If money were not an object, I would look real hard at the Redding Turret for rifle. I also have a Dillon 550 and 650 that I love and use them for pistol...

    44 magnum load question

It's extremely important that you use a roll crimp, and a heavy one at that, so the slow burning 2400 or 296 ETC., has enough time to develop the proper amount of gases. JUST CRIMP AT THE CANNALURE AND YOUR FINE

Progressive Presses: Red, Green, Orange, Red again, Blue, any color I missed

I would have to say the Dillon 550 is much better for your budget and it's the most popular Progressive press in America. I have both the 550 and 650 and they are both great presses. The 650 is kind of a poor man's 1050. The 550 will crank out a boat load of ammo and it's easy to use and much...

    Casting bullets

You can buy lead bullets pretty cheap that wasn't available when I started casting. If you decide to go ahead, I would look at Lee for a lot of my equipment. I have mostly RCBS equipment but that stuff has gone through the roof the last few years. Lee's prices have stayed low for the most part.

    paranoid new reloader

Check to make sure that your digital scale is weighing correctly. I use a beam balance scale for that. The idea of weighing a dime is not a bad idea either if you don't have a beam balance scale. Never load maximum loads. Always drop off to somewhere between light loads and medium loads...

    Lead Safety

I've been a science teacher for 35 years and feel like I know a little bit about chemicals and toxic metals. Yes they can be dangerous if you breath lead fumes. But if you use a fan to blow the fumes away and wash your hands, Don't eat or smoke around the stuff you shouldn't have a problem. I...
