    Trail cam recommendations...

The neighbor just gave me permission to hunt a small parcel that abuts our property. I'd like to set up a trail cam or two, but just discovered my old Bushnell trail cam bit the dust. There are so many options today, so I thought I'd look here for recommendations. Doesn't have to be fancy - no...

    New shooter, first target...

I took my early teen daughter to the range this weekend. It's the first time she's ever shot a firearm. After a safety lesson, I told her about sight picture and trigger press. She shot a few rounds from her grandpop's iron-sighted bolt action .22LR he bought when he was a young'un. But it was...

    1st buck of the season...

I went out this morning - an unusually warm morning, and wet, as it had been raining most of the night. Just as I was getting ready to quit, I see in the distance (and to my right) a nice buck trotting through the trees looking for girl deer. Heavily-wooded, there was only 1 quick chance for a...

    Could've been SOOO much worse...

I stumbled on this, and it made my eyes bulge. A guy downrange as an active shooter's going through the stage. Thankfully, I've never witnessed anything similar myself. And thankfully, no one was hurt. Still, a powerful reminder to be sure the range is clear.

    New keyring fob...

I recently bought a Tikka T3 CTR, and I've been very impressed with it. I also bought a new-to-me car, and could use a new keyring fob to go with it. I think I put the Tikka to good use. :D Shot at 100 yards. Front bipod, rear bag. Bone stock rifle. Ammo is 140gr SMK over H4350...

    Appleseed...

Over the Memorial Day weekend, I took my nephew to a 3-day clinic at Appleseed's home range. We had a great time, and learned a bunch. My nephew used a standard 10/22 with Tech sights, and I used a bolt action CZ452 with aperture sights. We also brought an AR15 to shoot some. All our rifles were...

    NIB Colt revolver values

I was looking at some really nice unfired Colt revolvers over the weekend. All in the original box with all papers. Pristine condition. Just wondering if my valuations were reasonable: The first was a blued 4" Python .357mag. Again, unfired, pristine, in the original box. Given what I see...

    9mm or .40S&W for IDPA/USPSA Production?

I've been shooting wheelguns in competition, and it's soon time to play with pistols a bit, just for a little mental break. When I do, It'll be for SSP/ESP in IDPA and production in USPSA, and will likely pick up an M&P Pro. The question is 9mm or .40? I reload, so factory ammo isn't part of the...

Why a bipod instead of a sling when prone?

Just curious - High Power's all about accuracy, and they use a sling. But outside of formal target shooting, a bipod is typically used, even in practical rifle competitions, which places heavy emphasis on accuracy. What gives? Is it easier/faster to get prone with a bipod? Is the sight...

    CZ 550 & Timney trigger

Anyone install a Timney trigger in their 550? Seems the 550 Timney trigger comes without a safety. Is it designed to work with the factory safety, or does the rifle now lack a safety?

New Winchester Model 70 in 6.5 Swede?

I read a lot of very good things about the new FN Winchester Model 70s made in SC. I'd love to get a Featherweight in 6.5x55 Swede, but don't see that cartridge listed among the current M70s. Yet, I see there is (was?) such a rifle, so am I correct in assuming these are older, pre-FN M70s...

    New PF for IDPA SSR

Rumor's been flying, but it looks like it's official, so I thought I'd post it here: http://idpaforum.yuku.com/topic/6941/Reduction-of-the-power-floor-for-SSR IDPA HQ has lowered the SSR PF requirement to 105,000 from 125,000 so those who don't reload can shoot factory .38spl ammo...

    An open invitation...

...to anyone who's ever been interested in dipping your toes in competitive shooting, or trying a revolver competitively, but didn't have the gear. I have a complete extra rig, so here's your chance - I'm offering the use of a tuned 4" Model 66, kydex holster, speedloaders & holders to anyone...

    NC Police Pistol League...

Anyone know their email address? Don't know if it's my computer, but their links don't seem to work on their website. Google hasn't been much help, either. Has anyone shot their PPL matches? Looks like it's based on the PPC CoF. Looks like there's one coming up this weekend, and I'd...

    NC wheel gunners...

A blatant plug for an ICORE match. I could've put this in the Competition sub-forum, but I figured this would reach more revolver shooters here... I just shot my first ICORE match over the weekend at Caswell Ranch. Take it from this noob that this was a whole lot of fun and a terrific venue...

Questions on low-power buckshot .30 cal rifle loads?

Really don't know why I'm asking...I don't own a .30 caliber rifle, but maybe I'm trying to rationalize getting a .30-30. Anyhow, I've read several places how one could whip up some low-power .30 cal loads by using a single 0-buckshot pellet and 3 grains of bullseye. Supposedly, the load...

Ever heard of a "Wagenhorst" PA Muzzleloader?

I'm trying to do some research into an old percussion muzzleloader that's been in our family for a long time. It's in fair condition, but it's solid and original. The maker remains a mystery, though, but since it has some local provenance, and we have a tantalizing lead, we'd love to find out...

    Swaged HBWCs

I'm shopping around for more HBWC bullets for target loads in a 6" S&W K-38. I've used Speer WCs in the past with good results, but I'm reading good things about Zero and Delta Precision HBWCs, too (cheaper, too). The thing that confuses me is that the Speer WC is 0.358", whereas the Zero...

    Coin-on-the-Barrel-Drill - thougher than I thought!

Been hearing about for for a while, and was skeptical, but yep, I gotta admit - it's tougher than I thought it'd be  I'll have to see if it helps my shooting, but I think it'd be even harder to keep it on there when the gun goes bang, no?

    Holiday '09 Handgun Match

I got sidetracked and didn't post an October Handgun Match. Instead, since the holidays are coming up, I thought I'd post a Holiday Match, which will run to January 2nd, 2010. You may notice a few things different than previous matches; I'm hoping these changes will make the match simpler and...
